Journal ArticleDOI
The fat-derived hormone adiponectin reverses insulin resistance associated with both lipoatrophy and obesity
Toshimasa Yamauchi,Junji Kamon,Hironori Waki,Yasuo Terauchi,Naoto Kubota,Kazuo Hara,Y. Mori,Tomohiro Ide,Kouji Murakami,Nobuyo Tsuboyama-Kasaoka,Osamu Ezaki,Y. Akanuma,Oksana Gavrilova,Charles Vinson,Marc L. Reitman,Hiroyuki Kagechika,Koichi Shudo,Madoka Yoda,Yasuko Nakano,Kazuyuki Tobe,R. Nagai,Shigeko Kimura,Motowo Tomita,Philippe Froguel,Takashi Kadowaki +24 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that decreased adiponectin is implicated in the development of insulin resistance in mouse models of both obesity and lipoatrophy and that the replenishment of adiponECTin might provide a novel treatment modality for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
PPARγ Mediates High-Fat Diet–Induced Adipocyte Hypertrophy and Insulin Resistance
Naoto Kubota,Yasuo Terauchi,Hiroshi Miki,Hiroyuki Tamemoto,Hiroyuki Tamemoto,Toshimasa Yamauchi,Kajuro Komeda,Shinobu Satoh,Ryosuke Nakano,Chikara Ishii,Takuya Sugiyama,Kazuhiro Eto,Yoshiharu Tsubamoto,Akira Okuno,Koji Murakami,Hisahiko Sekihara,Go Hasegawa,Makoto Naito,Yasushi Toyoshima,Satoshi Tanaka,Kunio Shiota,Toshio Kitamura,Toshiro Fujita,Osamu Ezaki,Shinichi Aizawa,Ryozo Nagai,Kazuyuki Tobe,Satoshi Kimura,Takashi Kadowaki +28 more
TL;DR: A hitherto unpredicted role for PPARγ in high-fat diet–induced obesity due to adipocyte hypertrophy and insulin resistance, which requires both alleles of PPARα, is revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adiponectin Stimulates AMP-Activated Protein Kinase in the Hypothalamus and Increases Food Intake
Naoto Kubota,Wataru Yano,Tetsuya Kubota,Tetsuya Kubota,Toshimasa Yamauchi,Shinsuke Itoh,Hiroki Kumagai,Hideki Kozono,Iseki Takamoto,Shiki Okamoto,Tetsuya Shiuchi,Ryo Suzuki,Hidemi Satoh,Atsushi Tsuchida,Masao Moroi,Kaoru Sugi,Tetsuo Noda,Tetsuo Noda,Hiroyuki Ebinuma,Yoichi Ueta,Tatsuya Kondo,Eiichi Araki,Osamu Ezaki,Ryozo Nagai,Kazuyuki Tobe,Yasuo Terauchi,Kohjiro Ueki,Yasuhiko Minokoshi,Takashi Kadowaki +28 more
TL;DR: It is shown that adiponectin stimulates food intake and decreases energy expenditure during fasting through its effects in the central nervous system via its receptor AdipoR1 to stimulate food intake.
Journal ArticleDOI
Conjugated linoleic acid supplementation reduces adipose tissue by apoptosis and develops lipodystrophy in mice.
Nobuyo Tsuboyama-Kasaoka,Mayumi Takahashi,Kentaro Tanemura,Hyounju Kim,Tsuyoshi Tange,Hitoshi Okuyama,Masaaki Kasai,Shinji Ikemoto,Osamu Ezaki +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that intake of CLA reduces adipose tissue by apoptosis and results in lipodystrophy, but hyperinsulinemia by CLA can be normalized by leptin administration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Skeletal Muscle FOXO1 (FKHR) Transgenic Mice Have Less Skeletal Muscle Mass, Down-regulated Type I (Slow Twitch/Red Muscle) Fiber Genes, and Impaired Glycemic Control
Yasutomi Kamei,Shinji Miura,Miki Suzuki,Yuko Kai,Junko Mizukami,Tomoyasu Taniguchi,Keiji Mochida,Tomoko Hata,Junichiro Matsuda,Hiroyuki Aburatani,Ichizo Nishino,Osamu Ezaki +11 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that FOXO1 negatively regulates skeletal muscle mass and type I fiber gene expression and leads to impaired skeletal muscle function.
