Journal ArticleDOI

Microbial communities and geochemical dynamics in an extremely acidic, metal-rich stream at an abandoned sulfide mine (Huelva, Spain) underpinned by two functional primary production systems

TL;DR: An extremely acidic stream draining an abandoned mine in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Spain, was ramified with stratified macroscopic gelatinous microbial growths, promoting complex microbial interactions involving transfer of electron donors and acceptors and of organic carbon between microorganisms in the stream water and the gelatinous streamer growths.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison of ferric iron generation by different species of acidophilic bacteria immobilized in packed-bed reactors.

TL;DR: The results of these experiments showed that different species of iron-oxidizing acidophiles have varying capacities to oxidize ferrous iron when immobilized in packed-bed bioreactors, and that novel isolates may be superior to well-known species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sulfidogenesis at Low pH by Acidophilic Bacteria and its Potential for the Selective Recovery of Transition Metals from Mine Waters

TL;DR: Biosulfidogenesis (the generation of hydrogen sulfide by microorganisms) in acidic liquors was investigated using two metabolically-distinct bacteria, and the potential of using acidophilic sulfidogens for the selective recovery of metals from acidic waste streams is discussed.
