The Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project
Gilbert P. Compo,Gilbert P. Compo,Jeffrey S. Whitaker,Prashant D. Sardeshmukh,Prashant D. Sardeshmukh,N. Matsui,N. Matsui,Rob Allan,Xiaojun Yin,Byron E. Gleason,Russell S. Vose,Glenn Rutledge,P. Bessemoulin,Stefan Brönnimann,Stefan Brönnimann,Manola Brunet,Manola Brunet,R. Crouthamel,Andrea Grant,Pavel Ya. Groisman,Pavel Ya. Groisman,Philip Jones,Michael C. Kruk,Andries Kruger,Gareth J. Marshall,Maurizio Maugeri,H. Mok,Øyvind Nordli,Tom Ross,Ricardo M. Trigo,Xiaolan L. Wang,Scott D. Woodruff,Steven J. Worley +32 more
TL;DR: The Twentieth Century Reanalysis (20CR) dataset as discussed by the authors provides the first estimates of global tropospheric variability, and of the dataset's time-varying quality, from 1871 to the present at 6-hourly temporal and 2° spatial resolutions.
Journal ArticleDOI
European phenological response to climate change matches the warming pattern
Annette Menzel,Tim H. Sparks,Nicole Estrella,Elisabeth Koch,Anto Aasa,Rein Ahas,Kerstin Alm-Kübler,Peter Bissolli,Ol 'ga Braslavská,Agrita Briede,Frank-M. Chmielewski,Zalika Črepinšek,Yannick Curnel,Åslög Dahl,Claudio Defila,Alison Donnelly,Yolanda Filella,Katarzyna Jatczak,Finn Måge,Antonio Mestre,Øyvind Nordli,Josep Peñuelas,Pentti Pirinen,Viera Remisová,Helfried Scheifinger,Martin Striz,Andreja Sušnik,Arnold J. H. van Vliet,F. E. Wielgolaski,Susanne Zach,Ana Zust +30 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used an enormous systematic phenological network data set of more than 125 000 observational series of 542 plant and 19 animal species in 21 European countries (1971-2000) and concluded that previously published results of phenological changes were not biased by reporting or publication predisposition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Long-term temperature trends and variability on Spitsbergen: the extended Svalbard Airport temperature series, 1898-2012
TL;DR: In this article, the Svalbard Airport composite series was extended to 1898 with the inclusion of observations made by hunting and scientific expeditions, which revealed large temperature variability on Spitsbergen, with an abrupt change from the cold 1910s to the local maxima of the 1930s and 1950s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Daily Mean Sea Level Pressure Reconstructions for the European–North Atlantic Region for the Period 1850–2003

Werner,Dennis Wheeler,Elena Xoplaki +38 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the development of a daily historical European-North Atlantic mean sea level pressure dataset (EMSLP) for 1850-2003 on a 5° latitude by longitude grid is described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent warming on Spitsbergen—Influence of atmospheric circulation and sea ice cover
Ketil Isaksen,Øyvind Nordli,Eirik J. Førland,Ewa Łupikasza,Steinar Eastwood,Tadeusz Niedźwiedź +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors attributed the recent warming to variations in large-scale atmospheric circulation (AC), air mass characteristics, and sea ice concentration (SIC), both regionally around Spitsbergen and locally in three fjords.
