Review of applications for advanced three-dimensional fibre textile composites

TL;DR: In this article, the potential applications of 3D fiber reinforced polymer composites made by the textile processes of weaving, braiding, stitching, and knitting are reviewed, and the scientific, technical, and economic issues impeding the more widespread use of three-dimensional textile composites are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mechanical performance of 2-D braided carbon/epoxy composites

TL;DR: Tension, shear, and compression tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical performance of two-dimensional braided carbon/epoxy composites in this paper, and it was found that these composites have comparable tension and compression stiffness but considerably reduced tension strength due to fiber damage and fiber tow waviness.
Journal ArticleDOI

An investigation of the mechanical performance of weft-knit milano-rib glass/epoxy composites

TL;DR: In this article, an experimental program has been carried out to study the mechanical performance of resin transfer molded composites comprising a weft-knit glass fabric of Milano-rib architecture and a number of mechanical properties i.e. tension, compression, bearing, impact and post-impact compression, were considered for laminates containing up to 12 layers of knitted fabric.
Journal ArticleDOI

An affordable methodology for replacing metallic aircraft panels with advanced composites

TL;DR: In this paper, an affordable approach to substitute metallic honeycomb panels with more durable stiffened graphite/epoxy composite panels was described, which is being demonstrated on a honeycomb panel for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F-111 aircraft.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pre-impregnated carbon fibre reinforced composite system for patch repair of steel I-beams

TL;DR: In this paper, a pre-impregnated carbon fiber reinforced epoxy repair system is evaluated through mechanical testing of tensile, double strap shear joint specimens, and structural testing of rehabilitated I-beams.
