CuO nanostructures: Synthesis, characterization, growth mechanisms, fundamental properties, and applications

Due to its abundance, scalability, and nontoxicity, Cu2O has attracted extensive attention toward solar energy conversion, and it is the best performing metal oxide material. Until now, the high efficiency devices are all planar in structure, and their photocurrent densities still fall well below the theoretical value of 14.5 mA cm(-2) due to the incompatible light absorption and charge carrier diffusion lengths. Nanowire structures have been considered as a rational and promising approach to solve this issue, but due to various challenges, performance improvements through the use of nanowires have rarely been achieved. In this work, we develop a new synthetic method to grow Cu2O nanowire arrays on conductive fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates with well-controlled phase and excellent electronic and photonic properties. Also, we introduce an innovative blocking layer strategy to enable high performance. Further, through material engineering by combining a conformal nanoscale p-n junction, durable protective overlayer, and uniform catalyst decoration, we have successfully fabricated Cu2O nanowire array photocathodes for hydrogen generation from solar water splitting delivering unprecedentedly high photocurrent densities of 10 mA cm(-2) and stable operation beyond 50 h, establishing a new benchmark for metal oxide based photoelectrodes.

Cu2O Nanowire Photocathodes for Efficient and Durable Solar Water Splitting

Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) were used to investigate the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on Cu, Cu2O, Cu(OH)2, and CuO catalysts. Aqueous 0.1 M KOH was used as the electrolyte. All four catalysts were oxidized or converted to CuO and Cu(OH)2 during a slow anodic sweep of cyclic voltammetry and exhibited similar activities for the OER. A Raman peak at 603 cm–1 appeared for all the four samples at OER-relevant potentials, ≥1.62 V vs RHE. This peak was identified as the Cu–O stretching vibration band of a CuIII oxide, a metastable species whose existence is dependent on the applied potential. Since this frequency matches well with that from a NaCuIIIO2 standard, we suggest that the chemical composition of the CuIII oxide is CuO2–-like. Green synthesis of CuO nanoparticles using Gloriosa superba L. extract and their antibacterial activity

The oxides of copper (CuxO) are fascinating materials due to their remarkable optical, electrical, thermal and magnetic properties. Nanostructuring of CuxO can further enhance the performance of this important functional material and provide it with unique properties that do not exist in its bulk form. Three distinctly different phases of CuxO, mainly CuO, Cu2O and Cu4O3, can be prepared by numerous synthesis techniques including, vapour deposition and liquid phase chemical methods. In this article, we present a review of nanostructured CuxO focusing on their material properties, methods of synthesis and an overview of various applications that have been associated with nanostructured CuxO.

Nanostructured copper oxide semiconductors: a perspective on materials, synthesis methods and applications

A combined experimental and theoretical study is reported on the vibrational properties of tenorite CuO and paramelaconite Cu4O3. The optically active modes have been measured by Raman scattering and infrared absorption spectroscopy. First-principles calculations have been carried out with the LDA+U approach to account for strong electron correlation in the copper oxides. The vibrational properties have been computed ab initio using the so-called direct method. Excellent agreement is found between the measured Raman and infrared peak positions and the calculated phonon frequencies at the Brillouin zone center, which allows the assignment of all prominent peaks of the Cu4O3 spectra. Through a detailed analysis of the displacement eigenvectors, it is shown that a close relationship exists between the Raman modes of CuO and Cu4O3.
