The SMOS Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithm
Yann Kerr,Philippe Waldteufel,P. Richaume,Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Paolo Ferrazzoli,A. Mahmoodi,Ahmad Al Bitar,Francois Cabot,C. Gruhier,S. Juglea,Delphine Leroux,Arnaud Mialon,Steven Delwart +12 more
TL;DR: A retrieval algorithm to deliver global soil moisture (SM) maps with a desired accuracy of 0.04 m3/m3 is given, discusses the caveats, and provides a glimpse of the Cal Val exercises.
Journal ArticleDOI
L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) Model: Description and calibration against experimental data sets over crop fields
Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Yann Kerr,Philippe Waldteufel,K. Saleh,M. J. Escorihuela,P. Richaume,Paolo Ferrazzoli,P. de Rosnay,Robert J. Gurney,Jean-Christophe Calvet,Jennifer Grant,M. Guglielmetti,Brian K. Hornbuckle,C. Matzler,Thierry Pellarin,Mike Schwank +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed description of soil and vegetation modelling in L-MEB is given in order to address these needs, and the use of LMEB in soil moisture retrievals is evaluated for several experimental data sets over agricultural crops.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modelling the Passive Microwave Signature from Land Surfaces: A Review of Recent Results and Application to the L-Band SMOS SMAP Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithms
Jean-Pierre Wigneron,Thomas J. Jackson,Peggy O'Neill,G. De Lannoy,P. de Rosnay,Jeffrey P. Walker,Paolo Ferrazzoli,Valery Mironov,Simone Bircher,Jennifer Grant,Mehmet Kurum,Mike Schwank,Joaquín Muñoz-Sabater,Narendra N. Das,Alain Royer,Amen Al-Yaari,Ahmad Al Bitar,Roberto Fernandez-Moran,Heather Lawrence,Arnaud Mialon,Marie Parrens,P. Richaume,Steven Delwart,Yann Kerr +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the significant progress which has been made over the last decade in this field of research with a focus on L-band, and a discussion on possible applications to the SMOS and SMAP soil moisture retrieval approaches.
Journal ArticleDOI
SMOS Radio Frequency Interference Scenario: Status and Actions Taken to Improve the RFI Environment in the 1400–1427-MHz Passive Band
TL;DR: The SMOS team has put strategies in place that, one year after launch, have already improved the RFI situation in Europe where half of the sources have been successfully localized and switched off.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evaluation of SMOS Soil Moisture Products Over Continental U.S. Using the SCAN/SNOTEL Network
Ahmad Al Bitar,Delphine Leroux,Yann Kerr,Olivier Merlin,P. Richaume,A. K. Sahoo,Eric F. Wood +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN)/SNOwpack TELemetry (SNOTEL) soil moisture monitoring stations to validate the performance of SMOS products over continental U.S. over year 2010, and the results suggest that SMOS meets the mission requirement of 0.04 m3/m3 over specific nominal cases.
