Achieving environmentally sustainable growing media for soilless plant cultivation systems – a review

A producao comercial de mudas e o cultivo sem solo de hortalicas estao se tornando praticas comuns entre os olericultores. Varios materiais orgânicos como as turfas, residuos de madeira, casca de pinus e de arroz parcialmente carbonizada ou nao, ou materiais inorgânicos como areia, rochas vulcânicas, perlita, la de rocha e a espuma fenolica ja sao utilizados como substratos, isoladamente ou em composicao. A casca de coco verde que em muitas regioes causa transtorno ao servico de limpeza publica pelo volume e pela dificuldade de decomposicao produz uma fibra que pode ser utilizada como substrato. Para a producao da fibra, a casca de coco verde e picada, desfibrada, triturada, lavada e secada. Para o uso como substrato na producao de mudas, a fibra deve passar por um processo de compostagem. Este processo nao e necessario para o uso como substrato em cultivo sem solo, mas no entanto, o substrato necessitara ser enriquecido com nutrientes em pre-plantio ou em fertirrigacao. O uso do substrato da fibra de coco verde na producao de tomate em casa de vegetacao, alcancou, em termos absolutos, 13,2 kg m-2 de frutos comerciais (media de 3 anos) cerca de 7,3% mais que o segundo melhor substrato, o po de serra com 12,3 kg m-2.

The influence of particle size (diameter between 2 mm) on the physical, physico-chemical and chemical properties of a coconut coir dust from Mexico was studied. Particle size significantly affected the physical properties, especially the air–water relationships. Air content increased and water-holding capacity (total and readily available) decreased with increasing particle diameter. The easily-available water content did not reveal a clear pattern of variation, showing the largest value in the fraction 0.125–0.25 mm. Particle size equivalent to 0.5 mm brought about an important and highly significant change in the physical properties studied. Coconut coir dust particle size also affected the physico-chemical and chemical characteristics, but to a lesser degree. Both the electrical conductivity and the available macro- and micro-element concentrations were significantly higher in the smaller size ranges, the largest values being obtained in the finest particle size fraction (<0.125 mm).

Selected physical properties of 13 coconut coir dusts from Asia, America, and Africa were compared to physical properties of sphagnum peat. All properties studied differed signifi cantly between and within sources, and from the peat. Coir dusts from India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand were composed mainly of pithy tissue, whereas most of those from Costa Rica, Ivory Coast, and Mexico contained abundant fi ber which was refl ected by a higher coarseness index (percentage by weight of particles larger than 1 mm in diameter). Coir dust was evaluated as a lightweight material, and its total porosity was above 94% (by volume). It also exhibited a high air content (from 24% to 89% by volume) but a low easily available and total water-holding capacity which ranged from 1 mm had only a slight or nonsignifi cant effect. Sphagnum peat is a widely used medium constituent for the production of container- ized crops (Bunt, 1988; Puustjarvi, 1977; Raviv et al., 1986, 2002; Schmilewski, 1996), particularly in the U.S., Europe, and Canada.
