TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a virtual machine for control using field and control devices that provide a virtual environment and communicate via an IP network. But their work is limited to the control of a single field device.
Abstract: The invention provides improved methods and apparatus for control using field and control devices that provide a virtual machine environment and that communicate via an IP network. By way of non-limiting example, such field device can be an “intelligent” transmitter or actuator that includes a low power processor, along with a random access memory, a read-only memory, FlashRAM, and a sensor interface. The processor can execute a real-time operating system, as well as a Java virtual machine (JVM). Java byte code executes in the JVM to configure the field device to perform typical process control functions, e.g., for proportional integral derivative (PID) control and signal conditioning. Control networks can include a plurality of such field and control devices interconnected by an IP network, such as an Ethernet.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for training and optimizing a neural network for use in controlling multivariable nonlinear processes is presented, where the neural network can be used as a controller generating manipulated variables for directly controlling the process or as part of a controller structure generating predicted process outputs.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for training and optimizing a neural network for use in controlling multivariable nonlinear processes. The neural network can be used as a controller generating manipulated variables for directly controlling the process or as part of a controller structure generating predicted process outputs. The neural network is trained and optimized off-line with historical values of the process inputs, outputs, and their rates of change. The determination of the manipulated variables or the predicted process outputs are based on an optimum prediction time which represents the effective response time of the process output to the setpoint such that the greatest change to the process output occurs as a result of a small change made to its paired manipulated variable.

TL;DR: In this article, a statistical process control system provides asymmetrical nonlinear automatic closed-loop feedback control, where an accumulated deviation of a measured subgroup means minus a target value, divided by the subgroup standard deviation, to modify the manipulated variable each time the accumulated value exceeds or below the target.
Abstract: A statistical process control system provides asymmetrical nonlinear automatic closed-loop feedback control. The system has application, for example, in the control of equipment that responds to a controlled variable signal to vary a measurable characteristic of a process. The system uses an accumulated deviation of a measured subgroup means minus a target value, divided by the subgroup standard deviation, to modify the manipulated variable each time the accumulated value exceeds a decision interval above or below the target. The system permits the use of independent slack variables subtracted from the accumulated deviation to more closely model the underlying process. Likewise, the system permits the use of independent alarm values and variable gains to permit greater control of the process.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide improved control devices, systems and methods for operation thereof, which rely on control devices that provide virtual machine environments in which Java objects, or other such software constructs, are executed to implement control (e.g., to monitor and/or control a device, process or system).
Abstract: The provides improved control devices, systems and methods for operation thereof. These rely on control devices that provide virtual machine environments in which Java objects, or other such software constructs, are executed to implement control (e.g., to monitor and/or control a device, process or system). These objects define blocks which are the basic functional unit of the control. They also define the input, output and body parts from which blocks are formed, and the signals that are communicated between blocks. The objects also define nested and composite groupings of blocks used to control loops and higher-level control functions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a neural network is used as an inner-loop controller in a process control system having a constraint management scheme which prevents integral windup by controlling the action of the outer-loop controllers when limiting is detected in the associated manipulated-variable control path.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a robust process control system that utilizes a neural-network multivariable inner-loop PD controller cascaded with decoupled outer-loop controllers with integral action, the combination providing a multivariable nonlinear PID and feedforward controller. The inner-loop neural-network controller is trained to achieve optimal performance behavior when future process behavior repeats the training experience. The outer-loop controllers compensate for process changes, unmeasured disturbances, and modeling errors. In the first and second embodiments, the neural network is used as an inner-loop controller in a process control system having a constraint management scheme which prevents integral windup by controlling the action of the outer-loop controllers when limiting is detected in the associated manipulated-variable control path. In the second and third embodiments, the neural-network controller is used without the integral controllers or the constraint management scheme as a simple PD feedforward controller.

TL;DR: In this article, the operational status information associated with a process entity in a process plant is mapped into one of a plurality of status conditions and an alert message associated with the process entity is generated.
Abstract: Operational status information associated with a process entity in a process plant(10) is received. The operational status information is mapped into one of a plurality of status conditions. Then, an alert message associated with the process entity is generated, where the alert message is indicative of the one status condition of the plurality of status conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, a diagnostic system for use in a process control system collects and stores in a database information pertaining to the operation of the process control systems, and uses an expert engine to apply rules for analysis to the information in the database to determine solutions to problems.
Abstract: A diagnostic system for use in a process control system collects and stores in a database information pertaining to the operation of the process control system, and that uses an expert engine to apply rules for analysis to the information in the database to determine solutions to problems. The database stores various types of information such as event and alarm data, notices of scheduled maintenance and changes to operating parameters, and historical data related to previous changes to the process control system that are relevant to determining both the source of the problems detected in the process control system and the steps necessary to either further analyze or correct the detected problems. The diagnostic system identifies the source of the problem and identifies and runs the appropriate analytical tools or takes remedial measures based on the rules for analysis for the expert engine.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a system and methodology facilitating automation security in a networked-based industrial controller environment, where various components, systems and methodologies are provided to facilitate varying levels of automation security.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and methodology facilitating automation security in a networked-based industrial controller environment. Various components, systems and methodologies are provided to facilitate varying levels of automation security in accordance with security analysis tools, security validation tools and/or security learning systems. The security analysis tool receives abstract factory models or descriptions for input and generates an output that can include security guidelines, components, topologies, procedures, rules, policies, and the like for deployment in an automation security network. The validation tools are operative in the automation security network, wherein the tools perform security checking and/or auditing functions, for example, to determine if security components are in place and/or in suitable working order. The security learning system monitors/learns network traffic patterns during a learning phase, fires alarms or events based upon detected deviations from the learned patterns, and/or causes other automated actions to occur.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a system for monitoring an industrial process and taking action based on the results of process monitoring, such as process control, paging, voicemail, and input for e-enterprise systems.
Abstract: A system for monitoring an industrial process and taking action based on the results of process monitoring. Actions taken may include process control, paging, voicemail, and input for e-enterprise systems. The system includes an input module for receiving a plurality of parameters from a process for manufacture of a substance or object. The system also includes a library module. The library module includes a plurality of computer aided processes. Any one of the computer aided processes is capable of using each of the plurality of parameters to compare at least two of the plurality of parameters against a training set of parameters. The training set of parameters is generally predetermined. The computer aided process is also capable of determining if the at least two of the plurality of parameters are within a predetermined range of the training set of parameters. Additionally, the system includes an output module for outputting a result based upon the training set and the plurality of parameters.
