The Kuramoto model: A simple paradigm for synchronization phenomena

The Pulse-Coupled Oscillator (PCO) is a novel protocol inspired by models used in mathematical biology to justify the emergence of synchrony in the natural world. Our paper introduces and demonstrates the efficacy of a new PCO protocol implementation that, by disabling all collision resolution mechanisms for a suitable portion of the node operations, lets the rapid establishment of a common clock and its maintenance. The key idea is to allow signals to be superimposed in time, a feature that is absent in previous implementations, because it is prevented by traditional medium access schemes. We map the PCO protocol into an event-driven asynchronous coloring algorithm, based on the local exchange of information to explain its convergence properties. The event-based description of the PCO protocol sets the stage for our experimental comparison with a competing decentralized network synchronization approach, namely, the Reference Broadcast Protocol (RBS). For comparison, we combined RBS with an asynchronous average consensus protocol, running exactly on the same MicaZ platforms. The experimental results showcase the better scalability of the PCO scheme compared to the competing method based on RBS, proving that the PCO primitive is a reasonable option to consider for wireless sensor network applications.

Understanding the Process and Conditions That Improve Preservice Teachers' Conceptions of Nature of Science in Real Contexts.

The concepts and instruments required for the teaching and learning of geometric optics are introduced in the didactic process without a proper didactic transposition. This claim is secured by the ample evidence of both wide- and deep-rooted alternative concepts on the topic. Didactic transposition is a theory that comes from a reflection on the teaching and learning process in mathematics but has been used in other disciplinary fields. It will be used in this work in order to clear up the main obstacles in the teaching-learning process of geometric optics. We proceed to argue that since Newton’s approach to optics, in his Book I of Opticks, is independent of the corpuscular or undulatory nature of light, it is the most suitable for a constructivist learning environment. However, Newton’s theory must be subject to a proper didactic transposition to help overcome the referred alternative concepts. Then is described our didactic transposition in order to create knowledge to be taught using a dialogical process between students’ previous knowledge, history of optics and the desired outcomes on geometrical optics in an elementary pre-service teacher training course. Finally, we use the scheme-facet structure of knowledge both to analyse and discuss our results as well as to illuminate shortcomings that must be addressed in our next stage of the inquiry.

A Didactic Sequence of Elementary Geometric Optics Informed by History and Philosophy of Science

In this work, we present a teaching-learning sequence on colour intended to a pre-service elementary teacher programme informed by History and Philosophy of Science. Working in a socio-constructivist framework, we made an excursion on the history of colour. Our excursion through history of colour, as well as the reported misconception on colour helps us to inform the constructions of the teaching-learning sequence. We apply a questionnaire both before and after each of the two cycles of action-research in order to assess students’ knowledge evolution on colour and to evaluate our teaching-learning sequence. Finally, we present a discussion on the persistence of deep-rooted alternative conceptions.

A Teaching-Learning Sequence of Colour Informed by History and Philosophy of Science

James Prescott Joule's (1818-1889) bicentenary took place in 2018 and commemorated by the IDTC with a Symposium-'James Joule's Bicentenary: Scientific and Pedagogical Issues Concerning Energy Conservation'-at the European Society for the History of Science (ESHS and BSHS), 14th-17th September, 2018, in London. This symposium had three main objectives: It aimed specifically to celebrate James Joule's achievements considering the most recent historiographical works with a particular focus on the principle of conservation of energy; It served the purpose of discussing the scientific and pedagogical issues related to heat, energy and work and how they are presented in textbooks and worked out in classrooms; It also provided discussions on the present situation of teaching and learning science through the use of History of Science, both in K-12 and college level with an emphasis on energy and related concepts. In the following, the Introduction of this Special Issue on Joule is presented.
