A system includes a server and a client computer device. The server determines a graphical object visible from a view region and determines one or more parameters defining the graphical object visible from the view region. The server further transmits the determined one or more parameters to a client computing device. The client computing device includes a processor to generate the graphical object using the determined one or more parameters received from the server. The client computing device further includes a display device to display the generated graphical object within a computer generated modeled environment.

System and method of procedural visibility for interactive and broadcast streaming of entertainment, advertising, and tactical 3D graphical information using a visibility event codec

Mobile LiDAR System is an emerging technology that combines multiple sensors. Active sensors, together with Inertial and Global Navigation System, are synchronized on a mobile platform to produce an accurate and precise geospatial 3D point cloud. They allow obtaining a large amount of georeferenced 3D information in a fast and efficient way, which can be used in several applications such as the 3D recording and reconstruction of complex urban areas and/or landscapes. In this study the Mobile LiDAR System is applied in the field of Cultural Heritage aiming to evaluate its performance with the purpose to document, divulgate, or to develop an architectural analysis. This study was focused on the Medieval Wall of Avila (Spain) and, specifically, the performed accuracy tests were applied in the “Alcazar” gate (National Monument from 1884). The Mobile LiDAR System is then compared to the most commonly employed active sensors (Terrestrial Laser Scanner) for large Cultural Heritage sites in regard to time, accuracy and resolution of the point cloud. The discrepancies between both technologies are established comparing directly the 3D point clouds generated, highlighting the errors affecting the architectural structures. Consequently, and based on a detailed geometrical analysis, an optimization methodology is proposed, establishing a segmented and classified cluster for the structures. Furthermore, three main clusters are settled, according to the curvature: (i) planar or low curvature; (ii) cylindrical, mild transitions and medium curvature; and (iii) the abrupt transitions of high curvature. The obtained 3D point clouds in each cluster are analyzed and optimized, considering the reference spatial sampling, according to a confidence interval and the feature curvature. The presented results suggest that Mobile LiDAR System is an optimal approach, allowing a high-speed data acquisition and providing an adequate accuracy for large Cultural Heritage sites.

Mobile LiDAR System: New Possibilities for the Documentation and Dissemination of Large Cultural Heritage Sites

In an exemplary embodiment, a method, conducted on a server, sends renderable graphics information to a client device, said graphics information including at least one set of graphics information visible from a second view region and not visible from a first view region. The method includes determining a likelihood that a viewpoint undergoes movement from said first view region to said second view region. The method further includes sending said at least one set of graphics information upon determination that the likelihood that the viewpoint undergoes movement from said first view region to said second view region is greater than a predetermined threshold, said movement determined according to a predetermined motion path.

Delivering and controlling streaming interactive media comprising rendered geometric, texture and lighting data

In an exemplary embodiment, a computer-implemented method determines a set of mesh polygons or fragments of the mesh polygons visible from a navigation cell. The method includes determining a composite view frustum containing predetermined view frusta and determining mesh polygons contained in the composite view frustum. The method includes determining at least one supporting polygon between the navigation cell and the contained mesh polygons. The method further includes constructing at least one wedge from the at least one supporting polygon, the at least one wedge extending away from the navigation cell beyond at least the contained mesh polygons. The method includes determining one or more intersections of the at least one wedge with the contained mesh polygons. The method also includes determining the set of the contained mesh polygons or fragments of the contained mesh polygons visible from the navigation cell using the determined one or more intersections.

System and method of reducing transmission bandwidth required for visibility-event streaming of interactive and non-interactive content

In recent years, new techniques for the morphological study of cut marks have become essential for the interpretation of prehistoric butchering practices. Different criteria have been suggested for the description and classification of cut marks. The methods commonly used for the study of cut marks rely on high-cost microscopy techniques with low portability (i.e., inability to work in situ), such as the 3D digital microscope (3D DM) or laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Recently, new algorithmic developments in the field of computer vision and photogrammetry, have achieved very high precision and resolution, offering a portable and low-cost alternative to microscopic techniques. However, the photogrammetric techniques present some disadvantages, such as longer data collection and processing time, and the requirement of some photogrammetric expertise for the calibration of the cameras and the acquisition of precise image orientation. In this paper, we compare two low-cost techniques and their application to cut mark studies: the micro-photogrammetry (M-PG) technique presented, developed, and validated previously, and a methodology based on the use of a structured light scanner (SLS). A total of 47 experimental cut marks, produced using a stainless steel knife, were analyzed. The data registered through virtual reconstruction was analyzed by means of three-dimensional geometric morphometrics (GMM).

Statistical Comparison between Low-Cost Methods for 3D Characterization of Cut-Marks on Bones

3D digitalization has become a common tool in archaeology. However, the post processing of the data produced by the scanners is still quite complex, and the computer models generated are given very few practical applications. In this paper, we analyse the key steps involved in the processing of the point clouds. We also review some of the more usual applications for the digital models and propose a conceptual framework for the use of this models in the documentation of cultural heritage.

In the last years several 3D model compression methods for multiresolution applications have been presented, most of them using 3D meshes. Octrees are a natural multiresolution representation scheme, although it is approximate. Extensions of classical Octrees that represent polyhedral object exactly have been proposed. One of them are the SP-Octrees, that incorporates boundary information of the represented object in the internal nodes of the octal tree, and include new terminal node types that contain boundary information of the solid. This new scheme can represent polyhedral objects exactly with a smaller storage requirement, and can accelerate basic operations with the model. In this work we present the use of this new representation scheme for progressive transmission of polyhedral solids.

Computer Graphics in Spain: Bounding-planes Octree: A new volume-based LOD scheme

Conventional information systems are frequently used to document Cultural Heritage sites. These systems are adequate for some specific purposes as they can store and retrieve a large amount of heterogeneous documents. Nevertheless, this is not enough for research and conservation purposes; researchers need to be able to find out relations between data. These relations are mostly spatial, and can be established by meaning of a 3D representation of the artifact. In order to achieve this, a new kind of information system is proposed, for which the 3D representation of the object is used as a blackboard, where all the data is represented. This paper describes the use of CHISel, a documentation tool that is designed as a GIS-like software for 3D cultural heritage, implementing the concept of a Cultural Heritage Information System (CHIS), and its application to document and analyze the restoration process of sculptures.

Using a Cultural Heritage Information System for the documentation of the restoration process

In the process of restoration and conservation of cultural heritage it’s necessary to use all available techniques that can contribute to a suitable knowledge of the process. In this paper we present the use of the 3D laser scanner for documenting the state of the Fuente de los Leones of the Alhambra, previous to the interventions of restoration that are being carried out at the moment. First, we present the classic techniques used for the graphical registry of the activities, describing how they have been used until now. Then, we describes the new process implanted with the use of the laser scanner, and show some results obtained. Finally, we describe some of the applications for which we plan to use the obtained models.
