TL;DR: Analysis by qPCR showed that whereas the biphenyl and toluene dioxygenase biomarkers were most abundant, increases in the concentration of the phenol hydroxylase gene reflected best the higher dichlorobenzene removal due to aerobic biostimulation, suggesting that quantitative molecular microbial ecology techniques could be useful to assess CB source-zone bioremediation performance.
Abstract: Flow-through aquifer columns were operated for 12 weeks to evaluate the benefits of aerobic biostimulation for the bioremediation of source-zone soil contaminated with chlorobenzenes (CBs). Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) was used to measure the concentration of total bacteria (16S rRNA gene) and oxygenase genes involved in the biodegradation of aromatic compounds (i.e., toluene dioxygenase, ring hydroxylating monooxygenase, naphthalene dioxygenase, phenol hydroxylase, and biphenyl dioxygenase). Monochlorobenzene, which is much more soluble than dichlorobenzenes, was primarily removed by flushing, and biostimulation showed little benefit. In contrast, dichlorobenzene removal was primarily due to biodegradation, and the removal efficiency was much higher in oxygen-amended columns compared to a control column. To our knowledge, this is the first report that oxygen addition can enhance CB source-zone soil bioremediation. Analysis by qPCR showed that whereas the biphenyl and toluene dioxygenase biomarkers were most abundant, increases in the concentration of the phenol hydroxylase gene reflected best the higher dichlorobenzene removal due to aerobic biostimulation. This suggests that quantitative molecular microbial ecology techniques could be useful to assess CB source-zone bioremediation performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the applicability and limitations of biologically active Fe(0) barriers to remove nitrate under various geochemical and hydraulic conditions were delineated, and the results indicated that hydrogenotrophic consortia are likely to develop around Fe( 0) walls.
Abstract: Experiments were conducted to delineate the applicability and limitations of biologically active Fe(0) barriers to remove nitrate under various geochemical and hydraulic conditions. Microcosm studies showed that, while no Fe(0) treatment was needed to remove nitrate from a high-carbon soil, adding Fe(0) to a low-carbon soil supplemented the electron donor pool and enhanced nitrate removal. Montmorillonite, an acidic aluminosilicate mineral, enhanced Fe(0) corrosion and nitrate removal (from about 1 to 3 mgsL NO3-N per day), and reduced the transient accumulation of nitrite. Combining autotrophic denitrifiers (e.g., Paracoccus denitrificans) with Fe(0) significantly reduced the amount of nitrite eluted from aquifer columns, from up to 7 to less than 1 mg/L NO2∼-N. Bacteria were observed to preferentially colonize the Fe(0) surface, which produces cathodic H2 when corroded by water. The preferential colonization of Fe(0) suggests that hydrogenotrophic consortia are likely to develop around Fe(0) walls t...

Abstract: In the version of this Article originally published, the name of the author ‘Mathew Robert Brown’ was incorrectly written as ‘Mathew Brown’ in the main author list and as ‘Matthew Brown’ in the Global Water Microbiome Consortium list. In addition, in the Global Water Microbiome Consortium list, the names of the authors ‘Kevin F. Boehnke’, ‘Janeth Sanabria’ and ‘Adalberto Noyola’ were incorrectly written as ‘Kevin Boehnke’, ‘Janeth Sanabria Gomez’ and ‘Adalberto Noyola Robles’, respectively. The names have now been corrected and the author initials in the author contributions section updated accordingly.

TL;DR: It is shown that HPβCD addition mitigates these adverse effects in human fibroblasts by significantly reducing LDLr and SREBP1 gene expression.
Abstract: Oxidative stress causes significant increases in both cholesterol uptake and intracellular accumulation of the aging biomarker lipofuscin Here we show that HPβCD addition mitigates these adverse effects in human fibroblasts by significantly reducing LDLr and SREBP1 gene expression In the absence of oxidative stress, HPβCD addition induces a paradoxical response, increasing cholesterol accumulation (but not lipofuscin) via upregulation of cholesterol biosynthesis These two distinct, but opposite effects highlight a previously overlooked therapeutic consideration: the cholesterol content of the treated cell determines which cholesterol pathways, either beneficial or harmful, are responsive to HPβCD

TL;DR: It is anticipated that this review can stimulate a new research doorway to facilitate the next generation of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts with ameliorated performances by harnessing the outstanding structural, electronic, and optical properties for the development of a sustainable future without environmental detriment.
Abstract: As a fascinating conjugated polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has become a new research hotspot and drawn broad interdisciplinary attention as a metal-free and visible-light-responsive photocatalyst in the arena of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. This is due to its appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical stability, and “earth-abundant” nature. This critical review summarizes a panorama of the latest progress related to the design and construction of pristine g-C3N4 and g-C3N4-based nanocomposites, including (1) nanoarchitecture design of bare g-C3N4, such as hard and soft templating approaches, supramolecular preorganization assembly, exfoliation, and template-free synthesis routes, (2) functionalization of g-C3N4 at an atomic level (elemental doping) and molecular level (copolymerization), and (3) modification of g-C3N4 with well-matched energy levels of another semiconductor or a metal as a cocatalyst to form heterojunction nanostructures. The constructi...

TL;DR: In this paper, the complex mechanisms of Fenton and Fenton-like reactions and the important factors influencing these reactions, from both a fundamental and practical perspective, in applications to water and soil treatment, are discussed.
Abstract: Fenton chemistry encompasses reactions of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of iron to generate highly reactive species such as the hydroxyl radical and possibly others. In this review, the complex mechanisms of Fenton and Fenton-like reactions and the important factors influencing these reactions, from both a fundamental and practical perspective, in applications to water and soil treatment, are discussed. The review covers modified versions including the photoassisted Fenton reaction, use of chelated iron, electro-Fenton reactions, and Fenton reactions using heterogeneous catalysts. Sections are devoted to nonclassical pathways, by-products, kinetics and process modeling, experimental design methodology, soil and aquifer treatment, use of Fenton in combination with other advanced oxidation processes or biodegradation, economic comparison with other advanced oxidation processes, and case studies.
