TL;DR: The development of the first practical ('black-box') all-optical regenerator capable of removing both phase and amplitude noise from binary phase-encoded optical communications signals is reported.
Abstract: Fibre-optic communications systems have traditionally carried data using binary (on-off) encoding of the light amplitude. However, next-generation systems will use both the amplitude and phase of the optical carrier to achieve higher spectral efficiencies and thus higher overall data capacities(1,2). Although this approach requires highly complex transmitters and receivers, the increased capacity and many further practical benefits that accrue from a full knowledge of the amplitude and phase of the optical field(3) more than outweigh this additional hardware complexity and can greatly simplify optical network design. However, use of the complex optical field gives rise to a new dominant limitation to system performance-nonlinear phase noise(4,5). Developing a device to remove this noise is therefore of great technical importance. Here, we report the development of the first practical ('black-box') all-optical regenerator capable of removing both phase and amplitude noise from binary phase-encoded optical communications signals.

TL;DR: An optical fast Fourier transform scheme is demonstrated that provides the necessary computing power to encode lower-bitrate tributaries into 10.8 and 26.0 Tbit s-1 line-rate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) data streams and to decode them from fibre-transmitted OFDM data streams.
Abstract: Optical transmission systems with terabit per second (Tbit s-1) single-channel line rates no longer seem to be too far-fetched. New services such as cloud computing, three-dimensional high-definition television and virtual-reality applications require unprecedented optical channel bandwidths. These high-capacity optical channels, however, are fed from lower-bitrate signals. The question then is whether the lower-bitrate tributary information can viably, energy-efficiently and effortlessly be encoded to and extracted from terabit per second data streams. We demonstrate an optical fast Fourier transform scheme that provides the necessary computing power to encode lower-bitrate tributaries into 10.8 and 26.0 Tbit s-1 line-rate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) data streams and to decode them from fibre-transmitted OFDM data streams. Experiments show the feasibility and ease of handling terabit per second data with low energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest line rate ever encoded onto a single light source.

TL;DR: The fusion-splicing of a bismuth holey fiber to silica fibers is demonstrated, which has resulted in reduced coupling loss and robust single mode guiding at 1550 nm.
Abstract: We report on the progress of bismuth oxide glass holey fibers for nonlinear device applications. The use of micron-scale core diameters has resulted in a very high nonlinearity of 1100 W-1 km-1 at 1550 nm. The nonlinear performance of the fibers is evaluated in terms of a newly introduced figure-of-merit for nonlinear device applications. Anomalous dispersion at 1550 nm has been predicted and experimentally confirmed by soliton self-frequency shifting. In addition, we demonstrate the fusion-splicing of a bismuth holey fiber to silica fibers, which has resulted in reduced coupling loss and robust single mode guiding at 1550 nm.

TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of nonsilica glasses and related technology for micro-structured fiber fabrication are reviewed, and numerical simulation results are shown using the properties and performance for mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation when seeding with nearIR, 200-fs pump pulses.
Abstract: In this paper, the properties of nonsilica glasses and the related technology for microstructured fiber fabrication are reviewed. Numerical simulation results are shown using the properties of nonsilica microstructured fibers for mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation when seeding with near-IR, 200-fs pump pulses. In particular, bismuth glass small-core fibers that have two zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) are investigated, and efficient mid-IR generation is enabled by phase-matching of a 2.0-mum seed across the upper ZDW into the 3-4.5 mum wavelength range. Fiber lengths considered were 40 mm. Simulation results for a range of nonsilica large-mode fibers are also shown for comparison.

TL;DR: In this paper, a range of elementary optical coding and decoding experiments employing superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) components are reported, showing that the SSFBG approach allows high-quality unipolar and bipolar coding.
Abstract: We report a range of elementary optical coding and decoding experiments employing superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) components: first, we perform a comparative study of the relative merits of bipolar and unipolar coding: decoding schemes and show that the SSFBG approach allows high-quality unipolar and bipolar coding. A performance close to that-theoretically predicted for seven-chip, 160-Gchip/s M-sequence codes is obtained. Second, we report the fabrication and performance of 63-chip, 160-Gchip/s, bipolar Gold sequence grating pairs. These codes are at least eight times longer than those generated by any other scheme based on fiber grating technology so far reported. Last, we describe a range of transmission system experiments for both the seven- and 63-bit bipolar grating pairs. Error-free performance is obtained over transmission distances of /spl sim/25 km of standard fiber. In addition, we have demonstrated error-free performance under multiuser operation (two simultaneous users). Our results highlight the precision and flexibility of our particular grating writing process and show that SSFBG technology represents a promising technology not just for optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) but also for an extended range of other pulse-shaping optical processing applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of numerical and experimental studies of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber is presented over the full range of experimentally reported parameters, from the femtosecond to the continuous-wave regime.
Abstract: A topical review of numerical and experimental studies of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber is presented over the full range of experimentally reported parameters, from the femtosecond to the continuous-wave regime. Results from numerical simulations are used to discuss the temporal and spectral characteristics of the supercontinuum, and to interpret the physics of the underlying spectral broadening processes. Particular attention is given to the case of supercontinuum generation seeded by femtosecond pulses in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime of photonic crystal fiber, where the processes of soliton fission, stimulated Raman scattering, and dispersive wave generation are reviewed in detail. The corresponding intensity and phase stability properties of the supercontinuum spectra generated under different conditions are also discussed.

TL;DR: This Review summarizes research on photonic, terahertz and microwave electromagnetic metamaterials and metadevices with functionalities attained through the exploitation of phase-change media, semiconductors, graphene, carbon nanotubes and liquid crystals.
Abstract: Metamaterials, artificial electromagnetic media that are structured on the subwavelength scale, were initially suggested for the negative-index 'superlens'. Later metamaterials became a paradigm for engineering electromagnetic space and controlling propagation of waves: the field of transformation optics was born. The research agenda is now shifting towards achieving tunable, switchable, nonlinear and sensing functionalities. It is therefore timely to discuss the emerging field of metadevices where we define the devices as having unique and useful functionalities that are realized by structuring of functional matter on the subwavelength scale. In this Review we summarize research on photonic, terahertz and microwave electromagnetic metamaterials and metadevices with functionalities attained through the exploitation of phase-change media, semiconductors, graphene, carbon nanotubes and liquid crystals. The Review also encompasses microelectromechanical metadevices, metadevices engaging the nonlinear and quantum response of superconductors, electrostatic and optomechanical forces and nonlinear metadevices incorporating lumped nonlinear components.

TL;DR: This paper reviews the current state of the art in terms of continuous-wave and pulsed performance of ytterbium-doped fiber lasers, the current fiber gain medium of choice, and by far the most developed in Terms of high-power performance.
Abstract: The rise in output power from rare-earth-doped fiber sources over the past decade, via the use of cladding-pumped fiber architectures, has been dramatic, leading to a range of fiber-based devices with outstanding performance in terms of output power, beam quality, overall efficiency, and flexibility with regard to operating wavelength and radiation format. This success in the high-power arena is largely due to the fiber’s geometry, which provides considerable resilience to the effects of heat generation in the core, and facilitates efficient conversion from relatively low-brightness diode pump radiation to high-brightness laser output. In this paper we review the current state of the art in terms of continuous-wave and pulsed performance of ytterbium-doped fiber lasers, the current fiber gain medium of choice, and by far the most developed in terms of high-power performance. We then review the current status and challenges of extending the technology to other rare-earth dopants and associated wavelengths of operation. Throughout we identify the key factors currently limiting fiber laser performance in different operating regimes—in particular thermal management, optical nonlinearity, and damage. Finally, we speculate as to the likely developments in pump laser technology, fiber design and fabrication, architectural approaches, and functionality that lie ahead in the coming decade and the implications they have on fiber laser performance and industrial/scientific adoption.
