Abstract: Search engines continue to struggle with the challenges presented by Web search: vague queries, impatient users and an enormous and rapidly expanding collection of unmoderated, heterogeneous documents all make for an extremely hostile search environment. In this paper we argue that conventional approaches to Web search -- those that adopt a traditional, document-centric, information retrieval perspective -- are limited by their refusal to consider the past search behaviour of users during future search sessions. In particular, we argue that in many circumstances the search behaviour of users is repetitive and regular; the same sort of queries tend to recur and the same type of results are often selected. We describe how this observation can lead to a novel approach to a more adaptive form of search, one that leverages past search behaviours as a means to re-rank future search results in a way that recognises the implicit preferences of communities of searchers. We describe and evaluate the I-SPY search engine, which implements this approach to collaborative, community-based search. We show that it offers potential improvements in search performance, especially in certain situations where communities of searchers share similar information needs and use similar queries to express these needs. We also show that I-SPY benefits from important advantages when it comes to user privacy. In short, we argue that I-SPY strikes a useful balance between search personalization and user privacy, by offering a unique form of anonymous personalization, and in doing so may very well provide privacy-conscious Web users with an acceptable approach to personalized search.

Abstract: As the search engine arms-race continues, search engines are constantly looking for ways to improve the manner in which they respond to user queries. Given the vagueness of Web search queries, recent research has focused on ways to introduce context into the search process as a means of clarifying vague, under-specified or ambiguous query terms. In this paper we describe a novel approach to using context in Web search that seeks to personalize the results of a generic search engine for the needs of a specialist community of users. In particular we describe two separate evaluations in detail that demonstrate how the collaborative search method has the potential to deliver significant search performance benefits to end-users while avoiding many of the privacy and security concerns that are commonly associated with related personalization research.

Abstract: Collaborative Web search exploits repetition and regularity within the query-space of a community of like-minded individuals in order to improve the quality of search results. In short, search results that have been judged to be relevant for past queries are promoted in response to similar queries that occur in the future. In this paper we present the results of a large-scale evaluation of this approach, in a corporate Web search scenario, which shows that significant benefits are available to its users.

Abstract: Web search is the dominant form of information access and everyday millions of searches are handled by mainstream search engines, but users still struggle to find what they are looking for, and there is much room for improvement. In this paper we describe a novel and practical approach to Web search that combines ideas from personalization and social networking to provide a more collaborative search experience. We described how this has been delivered by complementing, rather than competing with, mainstream search engines, which offers considerable business potential in a Google-dominated search marketplace.

Abstract: Web search engines struggle to satisfy the needs of Web users. Users are notoriously poor at representing their needs in the form of a query, and search engines are poor at responding to vague queries. However progress has been made by introducing context into the search process. In this paper we describe and evaluate a novel approach to using context in Web search that adapts a generic search engine for the needs of a specialist community of users. This collaborative search method enjoys significant performance benefits and avoids the privacy and security concerns that are commonly associated with related personalization research.

Abstract: A recommender system aims to provide users with personalized online product or service recommendations to handle the increasing online information overload problem and improve customer relationship management. Various recommender system techniques have been proposed since the mid-1990s, and many sorts of recommender system software have been developed recently for a variety of applications. Researchers and managers recognize that recommender systems offer great opportunities and challenges for business, government, education, and other domains, with more recent successful developments of recommender systems for real-world applications becoming apparent. It is thus vital that a high quality, instructive review of current trends should be conducted, not only of the theoretical research results but more importantly of the practical developments in recommender systems. This paper therefore reviews up-to-date application developments of recommender systems, clusters their applications into eight main categories: e-government, e-business, e-commerce/e-shopping, e-library, e-learning, e-tourism, e-resource services and e-group activities, and summarizes the related recommendation techniques used in each category. It systematically examines the reported recommender systems through four dimensions: recommendation methods (such as CF), recommender systems software (such as BizSeeker), real-world application domains (such as e-business) and application platforms (such as mobile-based platforms). Some significant new topics are identified and listed as new directions. By providing a state-of-the-art knowledge, this survey will directly support researchers and practical professionals in their understanding of developments in recommender system applications. Research papers on various recommender system applications are summarized.The recommender systems are examined systematically through four dimensions.The recommender system applications are classified into eight categories.Related recommendation techniques in each category are identified.Several new recommendation techniques and application areas are uncovered.

Abstract: Over the past two decades, a large amount of research effort has been devoted to developing algorithms that generate recommendations. The resulting research progress has established the importance of the user-item (U-I) matrix, which encodes the individual preferences of users for items in a collection, for recommender systems. The U-I matrix provides the basis for collaborative filtering (CF) techniques, the dominant framework for recommender systems. Currently, new recommendation scenarios are emerging that offer promising new information that goes beyond the U-I matrix. This information can be divided into two categories related to its source: rich side information concerning users and items, and interaction information associated with the interplay of users and items. In this survey, we summarize and analyze recommendation scenarios involving information sources and the CF algorithms that have been recently developed to address them. We provide a comprehensive introduction to a large body of research, more than 200 key references, with the aim of supporting the further development of recommender systems exploiting information beyond the U-I matrix. On the basis of this material, we identify and discuss what we see as the central challenges lying ahead for recommender system technology, both in terms of extensions of existing techniques as well as of the integration of techniques and technologies drawn from other research areas.

Abstract: As information becomes more ubiquitous and the demands that searchers have on search systems grow, there is a need to support search behaviors beyond simple lookup. Information seeking is the process or activity of attempting to obtain information in both human and technological contexts. Exploratory search describes an information-seeking problem context that is open-ended, persistent, and multifaceted, and information-seeking processes that are opportunistic, iterative, and multitactical. Exploratory searchers aim to solve complex problems and develop enhanced mental capacities. Exploratory search systems support this through symbiotic human-machine relationships that provide guidance in exploring unfamiliar information landscapes. Exploratory search has gained prominence in recent years. There is an increased interest from the information retrieval, information science, and human-computer interaction communities in moving beyond the traditional turn-taking interaction model support d by major Web search engines, and toward support for human intelligence amplification and information use. In this lecture, we introduce exploratory search, relate it to relevant extant research, outline the features of exploratory search systems, discuss the evaluation of these systems, and suggest some future directions for supporting exploratory search. Exploratory search is a new frontier in the search domain and is becoming increasingly important in shaping our future world.
