TL;DR: This chapter focuses on the use of textbooks in the field of comparative context, an ideal case study of how the development of a key element of the contemporary school is dependent on many forces, within and outside of the educational system.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the use of textbooks in the field of comparative context. In an age of computers and satellite communications, the most powerful and pervasive educational technology is the textbook. Textbooks are an essential part of the educational enterprise. Creating an effective textbook requires a combination of skills and a knowledge base. Producing textbooks requires technologies that are widespread and relatively inexpensive, yet in short supply in many areas. The distribution of textbooks constitutes another set of challenges. Textbooks serve several important functions in schooling. Textbooks are, in a way, an illustration of national will and of national policy in many countries. A textbook is an ideal case study of how the development of a key element of the contemporary school is dependent on many forces, within and outside of the educational system.
