Inorganic-organic hybrid photochromic materials.

Factors in polypyridyl ligands that control their thermodynamic metal ion selectivity in aqueous solution, and their use in selective fluorescent sensing, are examined. Preorganization of polypyridyl ligands ranging from bidentate to tetradentate by bridging benzo groups, as are present in 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) compared to 2,2′-bipyridyl (bpy), is discussed. The role of solvation is considered in relation to the relative affinity of ligands containing pyridyl groups for divalent and trivalent metal ions in aqueous solution. The effects of steric clashes between H atoms on polypyridyl ligands in decreasing complex stability are evaluated, as well as the effect of chelate ring size on metal ion selectivity. Phen ligands with other donor groups present at the 2 and 9 positions, such as alcohols, amides, carboxylates, and oximes are discussed. The design of pyridyl-based ligands for the separation of Am(III) from lanthanide(III) ions is considered, as well as ligands for the removal of metal ions such as Cu(II) or Zn(II) in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The design of pyridyl-based fluorescent sensors for selective sensing of metal ions is examined in terms of the role of spin–orbit coupling constants (ζ), paramagnetism, and steric effects in the development of selective fluorescent sensors that operate via chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). It is concluded that for lighter metal ions with smaller ζ values such as Zn(II) and Ca(II), and to a lesser extent Cd(II), that the CHEF effect can be achieved with pyridyl-containing fluorophores that coordinate directly to the metal ion. The way in which steric effects can be used to decrease the CHEF effect in Zn(II) relative to Cd(II) to enable selective sensing of the latter is analyzed. For heavier metal ions such as Hg(II) and Pb(II), because of their large ζ values which quench fluorescence, it is concluded that the fluorophore should be tethered to the metal-binding part of the sensor, and prevented from binding to the metal ion by steric and electronic factors. How Hg(II) can quench the CHEF effect by π-contact with fluorophores such as the anthracenyl group, which at first sight might not seem able to bond with metal ions, is examined.

The pyridyl group in ligand design for selective metal ion complexation and sensing

The occurrence of spin-crossover (SCO) highly depends on external influences, i.e. temperature, pressure, light irradiation or magnetic field, this electronic switching phenomenon is accompanied by drastic changes in magnetic and optical properties, dielectric constants, colour and structures. Thus, SCO materials are particularly attractive for potential applications in molecular sensing, switching, data storage, display, and other electronic devices at nanometric scale. Polymorphism is widely encountered in the studies of crystallization, phase transition, materials synthesis, biomineralization, and in the manufacture of drugs. Because different crystal forms of the same substance can possess very different properties and behave as different materials, so they are particularly meaningful for investigating SCO phenomena. Studying polymorphism of SCO compounds is therefore important for better understanding the structural factors contributing to spin transition and the structure–function relationship. This critical review is aimed to provide general readers with a comprehensive view of polymorphism in SCO systems. The article is generally structured according to specific metal ions and the dimensionality of compounds in the field. This paper is addressed to readers who are interested in multifunctional materials and tuning magnetic properties through supramolecular chemistry principles (129 references).

Polymorphism in spin-crossover systems

The spin-crossover phenomenon (SCO) is a fascinating field that potentially concerns any material containing a (d4–d7) transition metal complex finding therefore an echo in as diverse research fields as chemistry, physics, biology and geology. Particularly, molecular and coordination-polymers SCO solids are thoroughly investigated since their bistability promises new routes towards a large panel of potential applications including smart pigments, optical switches or memory devices. Notwithstanding these motivating applicative targets, numerous fundamental aspects of SCO are still debated. Among them, the investigation of the structure–property relationships is unfailingly at the heart of the SCO research field. All the facets of the richness of the structural behaviors shown by SCO compounds are only revealed when exploring the whole sample scales – from atomic to macroscopic – all the external stimuli – temperature, pressure, light and any combinations and derived perturbations – and the various forms of the SCO compounds in the solid state – crystalline powders, single-crystals, poorly crystalline or nano-sized particles. Crystallography allows investigating all these aspects of SCO solids. In the past few years, crystallography has certainly been in a significant phase of development pushing the frontiers of investigations, in particular thanks to the progress in X-ray diffraction techniques. The encounter between SCO materials and crystallography is captivating, taking advantages from each other. In this paper, a personal account mainly based on our recent results provides perspectives and new approaches that should be developed in the investigation of SCO materials.

Six new coordination polymers, namely, [Cd(SO4)(4-abpt)(H2O)]n·3nH2O (1), [Cu3(CN)3(4-abpt)2]n (2), [Cd(D-cam)(2-PyBIm)(H2O)]n (3), [Co(D-Hcam)(cptpy)]n (4), [Cd(D-cam)(btmb)]n (5), and [Cd2(D-cam)(L-cam)(btmbb)]n (6) (4-abpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole, D-H2cam = d-camphoric acid, 2-PyBIm = 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole, Hcptpy = 4′-(4-carboxyphenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine, btmb = 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, btmbb = 4,4′-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)-1,1′-biphenyl), have been synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions. Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and further characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, circular dichroism, and thermogravimetric analysis. Chiral Coordination Polymers with SHG-Active and Luminescence: An Unusual Homochiral 3D MOF Constructed from Achiral Components

New iron(II) complexes of formulas [Fe(abpt) 2(tcm) 2] ( 1), [Fe(abpt) 2(tcnome) 2] ( 2), and [Fe(abpt) 2(tcnoet) 2] ( 3) (abpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole, tcm (-) = [C(CN) 3] (-) = tricyanomethanide anion; tcnome (-) = [(NC) 2CC(OCH 3)C(CN) 2] (-) = 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-methoxypropenide anion; tcnoet (-) = [(NC) 2CC(OC 2H 5)C(CN) 2] (-) = 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-ethoxypropenide anion) have been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, magnetic properties and by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure determinations of 1 and 2 reveal in both cases centrosymmetric discrete iron(II) monomeric structures in which two abpt chelating ligands stand in the equatorial plane and two terminal polynitrile ligands complete the distorted octahedral environment in trans positions. For 3, the crystallographic studies revealed two polymorphs, 3- A and 3- B, exhibiting similar discrete molecular structures to those found for 1 and 2 but with different molecular arrangements. In agreement with the variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, the magnetic susceptibility measurements, performed in the temperature range 2-400 K, showed a spin-crossover phenomenon above room temperature for complexes 1, 3- A, and 3- B with a T 1/2 of 336, 377, and 383 K, respectively, while complex 2 remains in the high-spin ground state ( S = 2) in the whole temperature range. To understand further the magnetic behaviors of 1, 3-A, and 3-B, single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements were performed at high temperatures. The crystal structures of both polymorphs could not be obtained above 400 K because the crystals decomposed. However, single-crystal X-ray data have been collected for compound 1, which reaches the full high-spin state at lower temperatures. Its crystal structure, solved at 400 K, showed a strong modification of the iron coordination sphere (average Fe-N = 2.157(3) A vs 1.986(3) A at 293 K). In agreement with the magnetic properties. Such structural behavior is a signature of the spin-state transition from low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS). On the basis of the intermolecular pi stacking observed for the series described in this paper and for related complexes involving similar discrete structures, we have shown that complexes displaying frontal pi stacking present spin transition such as 1, 3-A, and 3-B and those involving sideways pi stacking such as complex 2 remain in the HS state.
