Journal ArticleDOI
Sustaining conservation values in selectively logged tropical forests: the attained and the attainable
Francis E. Putz,Francis E. Putz,Pieter A. Zuidema,Pieter A. Zuidema,Timothy Synnott,Marielos Peña-Claros,Michelle A. Pinard,Douglas Sheil,Jerome K. Vanclay,Plinio Sist,Sylvie Gourlet-Fleury,Bronson W. Griscom,John Palmer,Roderick Zagt +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the extent to which tropical forests sustain timber production, retain species, and conserve carbon stocks is examined, and some improvements in tropical forestry and how their implementation can be promoted.
Journal ArticleDOI
No growth stimulation of tropical trees by 150 years of CO2 fertilization but water-use efficiency increased
Peter van der Sleen,Groenendijk Peter E,Mart Vlam,Niels P. R. Anten,Niels P. R. Anten,Arnoud Boom,Frans Bongers,Thijs L. Pons,Gideon Terburg,Gideon Terburg,Pieter A. Zuidema,Pieter A. Zuidema +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, tree-ring data covering 150 years from tropical forests show that water-use efficiency has increased with CO2 concentrations but tree growth has not, while increasing CO2 concentration is expected to increase plant growth and water efficiency.
Journal ArticleDOI
Demographic threats to the sustainability of Brazil nut exploitation.
Carlos A. Peres,Cláudia Baider,Pieter A. Zuidema,Lúcia Helena de Oliveira Wadt,Karen A. Kainer,D. A. P. Gomes-Silva,Rafael de Paiva Salomão,Luciana L. Simões,Eduardo R. N. Franciosi,Fernando Cornejo Valverde,Rogério Gribel,Glenn H. Shepard,Milton Kanashiro,Peter Coventry,Douglas W. Yu,Andrew R. Watkinson,Robert P. Freckleton +16 more
TL;DR: Without management, intensively harvested populations will succumb to a process of senescence and demographic collapse, threatening this cornerstone of the Amazonian extractive economy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relating tree growth to rainfall in Bolivian rain forests: a test for six species using tree ring analysis
TL;DR: The results of the climate–growth analysis show a positive relationship between tree growth and rainfall in certain periods of the year, indicating that rainfall plays a major role in tree growth.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: A slow shift to a more dry‐affiliated Amazonia is underway, with changes in compositional dynamics consistent with climate‐change drivers, but yet to significantly impact whole‐community composition.
