TL;DR: In this article, an inspection optical technique based on ESPI can be adopted successfully for assessing fully integrity of stainless steel keg, in particular two kegs, the first pre-finished and the second with a known leak, are compared in order to test the possibility to employ ESPI as a non-destructive testing tool to quickly revealing the presence and to partially locate a leak in automatic way.

TL;DR: Efficient cw high-power second harmonic generation in a periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal placed in a resonant enhancement cavity and photo-thermal effect induced by photon absorption at the mirrors and in the crystal is observed, which however does not affect stable operation of the cavity.
Abstract: We report on efficient cw high-power second harmonic generation in a periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal placed in a resonant enhancement cavity. We tested three configurations, differing in the coupling mirror reflectivity, and a maximum conversion efficiency of about 76%, corresponding to 6.1 W of green light with 8.0 W of fundamental power, was achieved. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest cw power ever reported using a periodically-poled crystal in an external cavity. We observed photo-thermal effect induced by photon absorption at the mirrors and in the crystal, which however does not affect stable operation of the cavity. A further effect arises for two out of the three configurations, at higher values of the input power, which degrades the performance of the locked cavity. We suggest this effect is due to the onset of competing nonlinearities in the same crystal.

TL;DR: The concept of controlling parameters in image reconstruction of digital holograms in some real situations for inspecting silicon microelectronic-mechanical systems structures is demonstrated.
Abstract: Digital holograms recorded with a charge-coupled device array are numerically reconstructed in amplitude and phase through calculation of the Fresnel-Kirchhoff integral. The flexibility offered by the reconstruction process in digital holography allows exploitation of new possibilities of application in microscopy. Through the reconstruction process we will show that it is possible to control image parameters as focus distance, image size, and image resolution. Those explored potentialities open further the novel prospective of application of digital holography in single- and multiwavelengths operation either for display or metrological applications. We demonstrate the concept of controlling parameters in image reconstruction of digital holograms in some real situations for inspecting silicon microelectronic-mechanical systems structures.

TL;DR: In this paper, a thin layer of liquid polymer is deposited on a microengineered ferroelectric crystal and can be self-assembled and crosslinked in a single-step process as a consequence of the pyroelectric effect activated by simply heating the substrate.
Abstract: In this paper, we introduce an easy multiscale approach for the fabrication of polymer microlens arrays through a self-assembling process driven by the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pressure. This method represents a simple alternative to the conventional soft lithography techniques. A thin layer of liquid polymer is deposited on a microengineered ferroelectric crystal and can be self-assembled and cross-linked in a single-step process as a consequence of the pyroelectric effect activated by simply heating the substrate. Although the EHD instability induced by the pyroelectric effect was discovered in principle few years ago, here we demonstrate a systematic investigation for fabrication of microlens arrays in a multiscale range (i.e., between 25 to 200 μm diameter) with high degree of uniformity. By controlling the polymer instability driven by EHD, we report on two different microoptical shapes can be obtained spontaneously, i.e., spherical or toroidal. Here, we show how the geometrical properties and the focal length of the lens array are modulated by controlling two appropriate parameters. Such microlenses can be useful also as polymer patterned arrayed microstructures for optical data interconnections, OLEDs efficient light extraction, concentrating light in energy solar cells, imaging and 3-D display solutions, and other photonics applications.

TL;DR: It is shown that the p-jet allows us to print well-defined adhesion islands where NIH-3T3 fibroblasts are constrained to live into cluster configurations ranging from 20 down to single cell level.
Abstract: A simple and rapid process for multiscale printing of bioinks with dot widths ranging from hundreds of microns down to 0.5 μm is presented. The process makes use of spontaneous surface charges generated pyroelectrically that are able to draw little daughter droplets directly from the free meniscus of a mother drop through jetting ("p-jet"), thus avoiding time-consuming and expensive fabrication of microstructured nozzles. Multiscale can be easily achieved by modulating the parameters of the p-jet process. Here, it is shown that the p-jet allows us to print well-defined adhesion islands where NIH-3T3 fibroblasts are constrained to live into cluster configurations ranging from 20 down to single cell level. The proposed fabrication approach can be useful for high-throughput studies on cell adhesion, cytoskeleton organization, and stem cell differentiation.

TL;DR: In this article, a fast Fourier transform method of topography and interferometry is proposed to discriminate between elevation and depression of the object or wave-front form, which has not been possible by the fringe-contour generation techniques.
Abstract: A fast-Fourier-transform method of topography and interferometry is proposed. By computer processing of a noncontour type of fringe pattern, automatic discrimination is achieved between elevation and depression of the object or wave-front form, which has not been possible by the fringe-contour-generation techniques. The method has advantages over moire topography and conventional fringe-contour interferometry in both accuracy and sensitivity. Unlike fringe-scanning techniques, the method is easy to apply because it uses no moving components.
