Influence of Stacking Sequence and Fiber Content on the Mechanical Properties of Natural and Synthetic Fibers Reinforced Penta-Layered Hybrid Composites

This article investigates and presents the upshots observed in the brook of hybrid composites especially, the current investigation focuses on the impact of fiber composition, sequence, and stacking pattern on composite mechanical Features. Experimental Investigation on Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Hybridized Natural Fiber Reinforced Penta-Layered Hybrid Polymer Composite

Plant fibers are becoming popular in polymer composites because of their eco-friendliness and natural availabilities at lower cost than synthetic fibers. The kenaf fiber as reinforcement has shown better specific properties than glass fiber because of its low density. Thus, it will be crucial in composite development for structural industrial components along with other natural and artificial fiber with thermoset polymer matrix. This paper presents a review of kenaf fiber reinforced thermoset composites (KFTCs) and their hybrids. First, a brief overview of the basic components of KFTCs, and detailed insight into the fabrication techniques and performance of KFTCs and their hybrids are presented. KFTCs and their hybrid composites are explored in detail, especially for the mechanical, thermal-physical, water absorption, and durability properties to provide the space to narrate the development of ideas and our current understanding of this research field. After that matrix modification and fiber modification as alternate solutions to improve performance of KFTCs and their hybrids are reviewed. Finally, the application and the future potential scope of KFTCs and their hybrids are addressed. It is anticipated that this review paper will become a reliable reference on the performance optimization of KFTCs and their hybrids.

A Review on the Kenaf Fiber Reinforced Thermoset Composites

The present work investigates the fabrication of Kevlar/epoxy and basalt/epoxy and Kevlar/basalt/epoxy hybrid composite laminates and compares their mechanical properties. Mechanical characterization tests, including tension, flexural, impact and hardness tests, as per ASTM standards, were conducted on coupons cut out from the fabricated composite panels. A hand layup fabrication technique was used to fabricate composite panels with seven layers in them. Eight such laminates, with two containing pure Kevlar/epoxy and basalt/epoxy and the remaining ones containing Kevlar/basalt, were stacked in different sequences and impregnated in an epoxy matrix to provide a hybrid configuration. The microscopic examination of the fabricated laminates revealed that there was good bonding between the reinforcements and matrix material. Out of the eight composite panels including the hybrids, the ones with the pure basalt/epoxy exhibited more tensile and flexural strength than its Kevlar/epoxy counterpart due to its higher density value. The tensile and flexural strength of the hybrid laminates (i.e., combinations of basalt/Kevlar/epoxy) showed values in between pure basalt/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy laminates in general. A similar trend was observed in terms of hardness and impact strength for the fabricated composite laminates.

Hybridization Effect on Mechanical Properties of Basalt/Kevlar/Epoxy Composite Laminates

The hybridization of plant cellulose fillers in polymeric laminates is applied in different applications because of several benefits. The present investigation deals with the fabrication of four other eight-layer laminates by reinforcing bio fillers (coir, sisal, and hemp), Titanium carbide (TiC) nanoparticles, and ranging the stacking sequence of synthetic fabrics (carbon, Kevlar, Basalt, and Innegra) with bio/synthetic epoxy from wet layup technique. The fabricated laminate's characteristics were appraised by examining density, porosity, water absorption, flexural, impact strength, shore hardness, and thermal stability. It was observed from the experimental outcomes that the 3F8LTSE (Sisal, hemp, coir fillers, 2 layers of Carbon, Kevlar, Basalt, Innegra fabrics, and Titanium carbide reinforced synthetic epoxy) composite exhibited higher mechanical characteristics with a higher flexural strength (312.58 MPa), impact strength (35.13 kJ/m2), and shore D hardness (84.95), and decreased water absorption capacity by justifying its adequate for lightweight structures. The scanning electron microscope displayed the fiber pull out, debonding, and dispersion of fillers within the matrix of the composite. The current study also evaluates the prediction and performance of the artificial neural network (ANN) to model the physical, mechanical and thermal characteristics of bio/synthetic epoxy hybrid composites. However, the ANN model was more precise and proved that it is a primary method to optimize the properties of the fabricated bio/synthetic epoxy laminate.
