Abstract: Bacillus circulans PB7, isolated from the intestine of Catla catla, was evaluated for use as a probiotic supplement in the feeds for the fingerlings of Catla catla. The effect of supplement on the growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and immune response was evaluated. Catla fingerlings (ave. wt. 6.48 +/- 0.43 g) were fed diets supplemented with 2 x 10(4) (feed C1), 2 x 10(5) (feed C2), and 2 x 10(6) (feed C3) B. circulans PB 7 cells per 100 g feed for 60 days at 5% of the body weight per day in two equal installments in triplicate treatments. The control feed (CC) was not supplemented with the B. circulans. All the feeds were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Fish fed with feed C2 displayed better growth, significantly (P < or = 0.05) highest RNA/DNA ratio, a lower feed conversion ratio (FCR), and a higher protein efficiency ratio (PER) than the other experimental diets. Highest carcass protein and lipid was also observed in the fish fed C2 feed compared to the others. Significantly (P < or = 0.05), highest protease was recorded in fish fed feed C2 (47.9 +/- 0.016) and lowest in fish fed feed C3 (32.10 +/- 0.009), where alpha-amylase activity did not differ significantly (P < or = 0.05) beyond the lowest inclusion level. ALP, ACP, GOT, and GPT in the liver of Catla catla were the highest (P < or = 0.05) in fish fed C2 feed. The highest TSP, albumin, and globulin was observed in fish treated with C2 feed after 60 days feeding trial, but the lowest glucose level was observed in the same treatment. After the feeding trial, the non-specific immunity levels and disease resistance of fish were also studied. Phagocytic ratio, phagocytic index, and leucocrit value were the highest in fish fed feed C2. After the feeding trial, the fish were challenged for 10 days by bath exposure to Aeromonas hydrophila (AH1) (10(5)c.f.u. ml(-1) for 1 h, and, after 7 days, 10(7)c.f.u. ml(-1) for 1 h). Highest survival percentage was observed in fish fed with feed C2 compared with only 6.66% in the controls, which indicated the effectiveness of B. circulans PB 7 in reducing disease caused by A. hydrophila.

Abstract: Collagen, a major component of native extracellular matrix, has diverse biomedical applications. However, its application is limited due to lack of cost-effective production and risk of disease transmission from bovine sources currently utilized. This study describes fabrication and characterization of nano/micro fibrous scaffolds utilizing collagen extracted from fresh water fish origin. This is the first time collagen extracted from fresh water fish origin was studied for their biocompatibility and immunogenicity. The nano/micro fibrous collagen scaffolds were fabricated through self-assembly owing to its amphiphilic nature and were subsequently cross-linked. In vitro degradation study revealed higher stability of the cross-linked scaffolds with only ∼50% reduction of mass in 30 days, while the uncross-linked one degraded completely in 4 days. Further, minimal inflammatory response was observed when collagen solution was injected in mice with or without adjuvant, without significant dilution of sera. The fish collagen scaffolds exhibited considerable cell viability and were comparable with that of bovine collagen. SEM and fluorescence microscopic analysis revealed significant proliferation rate of cells on the scaffolds and within 5 days the cells were fully confluent. These findings indicated that fish collagen scaffolds derived from fresh water origin were highly biocompatible in nature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part A:, 2012.

Abstract: A potent feather degrading bacterium was isolated from soil and it was identified as Paenibacillus woosongensis TKB2 on the basis of morphological, biochemical and as well as 16S rDNA sequence characteristics. The physico-chemical cultural condition for keratinase (principal feather degrading enzyme) production by the isolate was optimized following OVAT (one variable at a time) protocol. It was found that the bacterium produced highest amount of keratinase at 0.75% (w/v) raw feather as sole substrate, 2% (v/v) inoculums, pH 8.5, incubation temperature 30 °C, 5% (w/v) sodium chloride and other mineral components like 0.05% K 2 HPO 4 , 0.025% MgSO 4 and 0.02% CaCO 3 (w/v). The filter sterilized fermented hydrolysate has the ability to promote significantly the germination of seeds (germination rate 87.5%) and growth of Bengal gram ( Cicer arietinum ) seedlings. It induces the nodule formation (3 fold) and increased soil fertility by altering N, P, K and the C/N ratio by 1.2 fold. This also enhanced the quantity of free living nitrogen fixers (2 fold) and phosphate solubilizers (5.8 fold) in comparison to the control soil. Thus the enzymatic feather hydrolysate can be exploited as a useful biological fertilizer in future.

Abstract: According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, aquaculture is growing more rapidly than all other animal food-production sectors (www.fao.org). Its contribution to global supplies of several species of fish, crustaceans and mollusks increased from 3.9% of total production by weight in 1970 to 33% in 2005. It has been estimated that fisheries and aquaculture supplied the world with about 110 million metric tons of food fish per year (FAO, State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2010.), providing a per capita supply of 16.7 kg (live weight equivalent). Of this supply, 47% is derived from aquaculture production. However, this production is hampered by unpredictable mortalities that may be due to negative interactions between fish and pathogenic bacteria. To solve this problem, farmers frequently use antibiotic compounds to treat bacterial diseases (Cabello 2006).
