Abstract: We present a study of hadronic transitions between Υ(mS) (m = 4, 3, 2) and Υ(nS) (n = 2, 1) resonances based on 347.5 fb^(-1) of data taken with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings. We report the first observation of Υ(4S) → ηΥ(1S) decay with a branching fraction [script B](Υ(4S) → ηΥ(1S)) = (1.96±0.06_(stat)±0.09_(syst))×10^(-4) and measure the ratio of partial widths Γ(Υ(4S) → ηΥ(1S))/Γ(Υ(4S) → π^+π^-Υ(1S))=2.41±0.40_(stat)±0.12_(syst). We set 90% CL upper limits on the ratios Γ(Υ(2S) → ηΥ(1S))/Γ(Υ(2S) → π^+π^-Υ(1S))<5.2×10^(-3) and Γ(Υ(3S) → ηΥ(1S))/Γ(Υ (3S) → π^+π^-Υ(1S))<1.9×10^(-2). We also present new measurements of the ratios Γ(Υ(4S) → π^+π^-Υ(2S))/Γ(Υ(4S) → π^+ π^-Υ(1S))=1.16±0.16_(stat)±0.14_(syst) and Γ(Υ(3S) → π^+π^-Υ(2S))/Γ(Υ(3S) → π^+ π^-Υ(1S))=0.577±0.026_(stat)±0.060_(syst).

Abstract: The ionization signals in the liquid argon of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter are studied in detail using cosmic muons. In particular, the drift time of the ionization electrons is measured and used to assess the intrinsic uniformity of the calorimeter gaps and estimate its impact on the constant term of the energy resolution. The drift times of electrons in the cells of the second layer of the calorimeter are uniform at the level of 1.3% in the barrel and 2.8% in the endcaps. This leads to an estimated contribution to the constant term of (0.29(-0.04)(+0.05))% in the barrel and (0.54(-0.04)(+0.06))% in the endcaps. The same data are used to measure the drift velocity of ionization electrons in liquid argon, which is found to be 4.61 +/- 0.07 mm/mu s at 88.5 K and 1 kV/mm.

Abstract: Searches are presented for heavy gauge bosons decaying into a top and a bottom quark in data collected by the CMS experiment at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 and 2.6 fb$^{−1}$ in the leptonic and hadronic analyses, respectively. Two final states are analyzed, one containing a single electron, or muon, and missing transverse momentum, and the other containing multiple jets and no electrons or muons. No evidence is found for a right-handed W′ boson (W′$_{R}$) and the combined analyses exclude at 95% confidence level W′$_{R}$ with masses below 2.4 TeV if $ {M}_{\mathrm{W}{\prime}_{\mathrm{R}}}\gg {M}_{ u_{\mathrm{R}}} $ (mass of the right-handed neutrino), and below 2.6 TeV if $ {M}_{\mathrm{W}{\prime}_{\mathrm{R}}}<{M}_{ u_{\mathrm{R}}} $ . The results provide the most stringent limits for right-handed W′ bosons in the top and bottom quark decay channel.

Abstract: Jet charge is an estimator of the electric charge of a quark, antiquark, or gluon initiating a jet. It is based on the momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of the jet constituents. Measurements of three charge observables of the leading jet in transverse momentum pT are performed with dijet events. The analysis is carried out with data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1). The results are presented as a function of the pT of the leading jet and compared to predictions from leading and next-to-leading-order event generators combined with parton showers. Measured jet charge distributions, unfolded for detector effects, are reported, which expand on previous measurements of the jet charge average and standard deviation in pp collisions.

Abstract: A first search for same-sign WW production via double-parton scattering is performed based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV using dimuon and electron-muon final states. The search is based on the analysis of data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected single-parton scattering yields. A 95% confidence level upper limit of 0.32 pb is set on the inclusive cross section for same-sign WW production via the double-parton scattering process. This upper limit is used to place a 95% confidence level lower limit of 12.2 mb on the effective double-parton cross section parameter, closely related to the transverse distribution of partons in the proton. This limit on the effective cross section is consistent with previous measurements as well as with Monte Carlo event generator predictions.

Abstract: Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones.
