Cataract is one of the major ophthalmic diseases worldwide which can potentially affect the performance of iris-based biometric systems. While existing research has shown that cataract does not have a major impact on iris recognition, our observations suggest that iris segmentation algorithms are not well equipped to handle cataract or post cataract surgery cases, thereby affecting the overall iris recognition performance. This paper presents an efficient iris segmentation algorithm with variations due to cataract and post cataract surgery. The proposed algorithm, termed as SegDenseNet, is a deep learning algorithm based on DenseNet. The experiments on the IIITD Cataract Surgery Database show that improving iris segmentation enhances the recognition performance by up to 25% across different sensors and matchers.

Essentials of Cataract Surgery

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has many uses in medicine and engineering biology. It is a non-invasive technique for looking at the layered structures of tissues, such as skin, retina, teeth, and heart. Scanning of the retinal image reveals defects in the underlying layers. OCT performs in situ high resolution cross sectional imaging on a micron scale in real time. An application of OCT is in the imaging of diseases such as central serous retinopathy (CSR), which is the result of fluid accumulation under the macula. In the acquired OCT image, an inherent characteristic of coherent imaging is the presence of speckle noise. Reduction of speckle noise is one of the most important considerations for increasing the quality of coherent images. To enhance the quality, different filtering techniques are applied to analyze spectral noise in a CSR-OCT image. To analyze the effectiveness of the applied filtering techniques, various statistical parameters are applied and studied, such as the mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio, normalized crosscorrelation, and normalized absolute error. In this study, the resultant statistical information from the applied statistical parameters is subjected to multidimensional analysis to determine the best filtering technique to reduce speckle noise in CSR-OCT images.

Management of Cataracts and Glaucoma

Objective: This study aims to determine the clinical efficacy of articular cartilage injury repair surgery.
Methods: A total of 112 patients with knee articular cartilage injury who received treatment at our hospital from August 2015 to May 2017 were selected as research subjects. The patients were divided into control and experimental groups (56 patients in each group) through random even-odd number method and treated with arthroscopic joint debridement and arthroscopic microfracture repair surgery, respectively. Clinical treatment effect, HSS score, complication, and surgical result satisfaction were observed and compared between the two groups.
Results: Patients in the experimental group exhibited significantly higher total effective rate than those in the control group (P<0.05). The HSS score in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group, and more patients in the former group showed HSS score higher than 85 or between 60-85 and less patients had HSS score less than 60 (P<0.05). Patients in the control group experienced less satisfaction on the result of surgery and higher complication incidence rate than those in the experimental group; the difference was statistically significant between the two groups (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Arthroscopic microfracture surgery exerts satisfactory treatment effect for knee articular cartilage injury and can significantly improve patient satisfaction regarding surgery result, improve the articular function and physical action ability of patients, and reduce the incidence rate of complications. Hence, this technique is a feasible option and must be promoted for clinical application.

We present a novel technique to examine the consequence of cataract surgery. Iris is one of the best biometric due to its unique biological properties. It is stable throughout the life. Cataract surgery may cause changes in the iris structure. A cataract is an eye disease that causes the eye’s lens to become cloudy and opaque with decreased vision. Aging, obesity, family history, heavy drinking, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, myopia or sun exposure are the risk factors of cataract. This paper proposes an algorithm to improve the level of security or match the unmatched person due to structural and textural changes in irises. Feature vector results from gober are applied to SOM clustering approach. Our proposed method has been evaluated by a dataset composed of different irises of an individual before and after the surgery which are collected from various studies. Experimental results and performance comparisons have presented.
