TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that metal sulfite compounds probably do not play any significant role in stabilizing sulfur (IV) in droplet solutions in the atmosphere and that rapid redox reactions occur and under some conditions the sulfur may be quantitatively converted to dithionate.
