TL;DR: The history of the project, the mission, collections policies, and technical specifications including metadata best practices to ensure the interoperability and facilitate searching of the repository, and the process of collaborating on metadata standards are outlined.
Abstract: Institutional repositories are an exciting innovation in scholarly communication. Liberal arts institutions have a specific mission and a unique opportunity to create a repository collection that reflects this tradition. However, the challenges of cost, staffing, infrastructure, standardized metadata, and content recruitment that are part and parcel of developing institutional repositories may be daunting to individual liberal arts institutions. The idea that multiple, like-minded institutions could join forces to share their efforts, unique challenges, and maximize their efficiencies grew into the Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (LASR). In order for the group to form, we first agreed upon a mission, collections policies, and technical specifications including metadata best practices to ensure the interoperability and facilitate searching of the repository. This article outlines the history of the project and the process of collaborating on metadata standards.

TL;DR: Digital scholars gradually come to understand the stakes of early decisions in metadata creation and how that affects database structures, record display, keyword searching and long-term curation.
Abstract: Purpose Working with faculty and staff to create digital projects requires a complex group of skills and activities. Potential collaborators often jump to the end vision without fully grasping the need for proper description and metadata. Design/methodology/approach On-the-job experiences. Contextual inquiry. Findings Using Google Forms and Sheets is perceived of as neutral and less frightening than working in a platform that will be the home of the project or using other proprietary productivity software. Social implications Digital scholars gradually come to understand the stakes of early decisions in metadata creation (such as file naming conventions and controlled vocabulary) and how that affects database structures, record display, keyword searching and long-term curation. Originality/value The authors did not find any other publications addressing using Google Apps for creating metadata.

Abstract: Abstract The Grinnell College Libraries, at capacity for shelving for several years, renovated an existing building as a storage facility. The libraries are at the beginning of a building project including a science library that will house more volumes than the Windsor Science Library. Options for our main library are being explored but would be built ten or more years in the future. Our storage facility is located offcampus. It is climate controlled, equipped with dry fire suppression and security, and outfitted with compact shelving. It will not be staffed or have additional staffing to support paging of materials. Materials moved to the storage facility are primarily journals and monographs available full-text online.

TL;DR: This study has undertaken a co-word analysis of author keywords in articles from the SCOPUS database from 1997 to 2012 and found 8 clusters that represent the intellectual structure of Institutional Repository Research.
Abstract: The institutional repository is a major means of providing open access to academic output and is changing academic communications. As use of the institutional repository is spreading, research advancing its management policy and technology has been conducted in the library and academic communities. This study has undertaken a co-word analysis of author keywords in articles from the SCOPUS database from 1997 to 2012 and found 8 clusters that represent the intellectual structure of Institutional Repository Research, including 'Metadata', 'Open Access', 'Institutional Repository', 'digital Library', 'dSpace', 'Copyright', 'Preservation' and 'Sematic Web'. To understand these intellectual structures, this study used a co-occurrence matrix based on Pearson's correlation coefficient to create a clustering of the words using the hierarchical clustering technique. To visualize these intellectual structures, this study carried out a multidimensional scaling analysis, to which a PROXCAL algorithm was applied.

TL;DR: The most common types of grey literature were conference papers, technical reports, and theses and dissertations in the subject databases of over 100 academic institutions as mentioned in this paper, including arts and humanities.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION In many disciplines grey literature, or works that are more ephemeral in nature and are not typically published through traditional scholarly channels, are heavily used alongside traditional materials and sources. We were interested in the type and frequency of grey literature in subject databases and in North American institutional repositories (IRs) as well as what disciplines use grey literature. METHODS Over 100 subject databases utilized by academic researchers and the IRs of over 100 academic institutions were studied. Document type, search capabilities, and level of curation were noted. RESULTS Grey literature was present in the majority (68%) of the literature databases and almost all IRs (95%) contained grey literature. DISCUSSION Grey literature was present in the subject databases across all broad disciplines including arts and humanities. In these resources the most common types of grey literature were conference papers, technical reports, and theses and dissertations. The findability of the grey literature in IRs varied widely as did evidence of active collection development. CONCLUSION Recommendations include the development of consistent metadata standards for grey literature to enhance searching within individual resources as well as supporting future interoperability. An increased level of collection development of grey literature in institutional repositories would facilitate preservation and increase the findability and reach of grey literature.

Abstract: This year’s annual bibliography includes materials reflecting various aspects of library instruction and information literacy. The academic literature continues to generate the greatest number of citations in these areas, but a small increase in the special libraries area was noted for 2000. The themes of standards for information literacy and assessment were apparent in all areas of the literature.

Abstract: This bibliography lists citations of English-language articles, books and other printed and electronic sources that are useful in understanding scholarly electronic publishing efforts on the Internet. Most sources have been published from 1990 through 2010; however, a limited number of key sources published prior to 1990 are also included.
