This was a retrospective study of all the cases of ovarian tumours operated in Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital from January 2006 to July 2008. All the cases of ovarian tumour were included, irrespective of whether diagnosed preoperatively or found incidently during operation. The nature of tumour whether benign or malignant, their presenting symptoms, age, parity age of menarche, type of operation and histopathological finding was recorded. The incidence of ovarian tumour was 16.7% among total gynaecological admissions, out of which malignant ovarian tumour was 9.5%. The age range was 18 to 70 years. Benign tumour occurred in all age group 86 (90.5%) while maximum of malignant tumour occurred after 40 years (66.7%). Eleven point six percent were unmarried, 20.0% nulliparous, 7.4% were pregnant and 38.9% were of one to two parity. 10.0% were asymptomatic and commonest symptom was pain in lower abdomen (84.0%). Seventy two point six percent were surface epithelium tumour which is common in older women. Twenty seven percent were germ cell tumour which is common in younger age group. Commonest surface epithelial tumour was serous cyst adenoma (40.0%) and commonest germ cell tumour was Dermoid (25.3%).Commonest complication of ovarian cyst was torsion (12.6%).

Study of ovarian tumours in Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital.

OBJECTIVES 
To identify the different histopathological types of ovarian neoplasms and their age distribution.
 METHODS 
This is a retrospective study were ovarian neoplasms received by the Pathology Department of King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between January 1995 and December 2010 were reviewed and their frequencies in different age groups were calculated.
 RESULTS 
Out of 618 ovarian specimens studied, 382 (61.8%) were ovarian neoplasms while 38.2% were non-neoplastic functional cysts. Benign neoplasms (n=278; 72.8%) were more common than borderline (n=20; 5.2%) and malignant ones (n=84; 22%) in all age groups. Surface epithelial neoplasms were the most common (61%) followed by germ cell (28%), gender cord stromal (7.6%) and metastatic tumors (3.4%). The most common benign neoplasm was serous cystadenoma (44.6%) and the most common malignant was serous cystadenocarcinoma (33.3%). The most common ovarian neoplasm below the age of 20 years was surface epithelial tumors (n=24) followed by germ cell tumor (16 cases). Benign neoplasms (n=213) were more common than malignant ones (n=42) in the age group from 20-51 years. Malignant ovarian neoplasms (35 out of the 71) were more common than benign (34 cases) in the age above 52.
 CONCLUSIONS 
Benign ovarian neoplasms are more common than malignant ones. The most common benign ovarian neoplasm is serous cystadenoma and the commonest malignant neoplasm is serous cystadenocarcinoma. The prevalence of malignant ovarian neoplasms increases with increasing age.

Histopathological pattern of ovarian neoplasms and their age distribution in the western region of Saudi Arabia.

To study the clinical and histopathological presentation of ovarian masses. Retrospective analysis of 205 cases from May 2009 to June 2013. Incidence of ovarian masses was 6.9 %. Among 205 cases, 68 % were neoplastic. Among the neoplasms, 87.8 % were benign, 10 % malignant, and 2.2 % borderline. Mean ages of malignant and benign neoplasm were 41 and 39 years, respectively. 42.9 % malignant tumors presented with non-specific abdominal and constitutional symptoms. Serous cystadenoma was the commonest benign tumor (67 %) followed by Mucinous (19 %) and Dermoid (11.6 %). Most common malignant ovarian tumor was Serous cystadenocarcinoma (42.9 %). Out of the malignant cases, all were primary except one secondary deposit from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Only 28.6 % presented at stage I, remaining presented at stage III/IV. Ovarian neoplasms have twice the incidence of non-neoplasms. Mean age of malignant tumors is decreased. Rising trend in Mucinous cystadenoma is noted.

Ovarian Masses: Changing Clinico Histopathological Trends

Ovarian cysts are an extremely common gynecological problem. Majority of ovarian cysts are benign with few cases being malignant. This is a retrospective study of all the cases of ovarian cysts operated in a tertiary hospital (Kathmandu Medical College, KMC) from January 2006 to December 2008. In this 3 years duration, 102 cases (2.0%) were of ovarian cyst out of the total histopathological specimen processed in pathology department. The mean age of presentation was 38years. Ovarian cysts (27.5%) were more commonly seen in the age group 21- 30 years. Bilateral ovaries were involved in 19 cases (18.6%). Among these ovarian cysts, 89 cases (87.3%) were benign and 13 cases (12.7%) were malignant. The most common type of ovarian cyst was serous cystadenoma (40.2%) followed by mature cystic teratoma (15.7%). Metastasis to ovary was seen in 6.9% (7 cases). The most common metastasis was adeno carcinoma from gastro intestinal tract (4 cases). Other metastases to ovary were 2 cases from endometrioid adeno carcinoma of endometrium and 1 case from Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma of small intestine.

A study of ovarian cyst in a tertiary hospital of Kathmandu valley.

Background: Ovarian tumours are one of the major cause of gynaecological problems in females and present marked variation in their histological types. Relative frequency of these lesions is different for Western and Asian countries.

Aims & Objective: This study was designed to find out frequency of various histological patterns of ovarian tumours in patients attending Pathology department of a teaching institute in Gujarat.

Material and Methods: A retrospective – series study was conducted on 337 cases of ovarian masses, reported from January 2002 to December 2012.

Results: Mean age of the subjects was 33.6 years, ranging from 8 to 70 years. In a total 337 cases of ovarian masses, 197 (58.46%) were non-neoplastic and 140 (41.54%) were neoplastic. Among neoplastic lesions, 77.14% (108/140) were benign, 3.57% (5/140) were borderline and 19.29% (27/140) were malignant. The commonest non-neoplastic lesion was luteal cyst (59/197) followed by simple serous cyst (56/197). The commonest malignant tumour was serous cystadenocarcinoma (11/27) followed by mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (5/27). The commonest borderline tumour was borderline serous tumour (4/5).

Conclusion: Non-neoplastic lesions were more common than neoplastic lesions. Among neoplastic lesions benign tumours were common. The commonest benign tumour was serous cystadenoma and malignant was serous cystadenocarcinoma. The commonest non-neoplastic lesion was luteal cyst. Among histological types of ovarian tumours, surface epithelial tumours dominated the other types.

The relative frequency and histopathological pattern of ovarian masses - 11 year study at tertiary care centre

A female's risk at birth of having ovarian tumor sometime in her life is 6-7%. Relative frequency of ovarian tumor is different for western and Asian countries. Two third of ovarian tumors occur in women of reproductive age group. This study was done in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital with aim to find out frequency of different histological types of ovarian tumors and their age distribution and thus provide an institutional experience from Nepal also. One hundred and sixty one ovarian tumors, reported from April 2004 to March 2006 were included in the study. One hundred and thirty five of these tumors (83.9%) were benign and 16.1% (26/161) were malignant. Surface epithelial tumors were most common (52.2%) followed by germ cell tumors (42.2%). Mature cystic teratoma was commonest benign tumor (48.2%). Serous adenocarcinoma was commonest malignant tumor (46.2%). For all age groups, benign tumors were more common than malignant ones. Most ovarian tumors (47.2%) were seen between 21 -40 years where as most malignant tumors (73.1%) were seen above 40 years. In 1st two decades, germ cell tumors were more common than other tumors.
