There are many branches of philosophy called "the philosophy of X," where X = disciplines ranging from history to physics. The philosophy of artificial intelligence has a long history, and there are many courses and texts with that title. Surprisingly, the philosophy of computer science is not nearly as well-developed. This article proposes topics that might constitute the philosophy of computer science and describes a course covering those topics, along with suggested readings and assignments.

Big questions of personality are those that are simple, important, and often have been asked repeatedly over time, such as “Who am I?” “What is human nature?” and “How does personality work?” This article identifies 20 big questions relevant to personality psychology. The historical background of each question is briefly described, and the questions are arranged into a model of big questions about personality. The questions, it is argued, both reflect and help to clarify the intrinsic interest in studying personality psychology. They offer insight into the cohesive nature of the field of personality by helping to define its common pursuits.

The Big Questions of Personality Psychology: Defining Common Pursuits of the Discipline

Some of the most important lessons I learned from philosophy and women's studies are related to critical thinking. Work in analytic philosophy taught me how to better locate and reconstruct arguments from what had often seemed like a morass of surrounding text. Philosophy also provided me with a stronger sense of entitlement about using my own judgment. I began to believe that I, too, had permission to evaluate the reasoning of others and learned to do so with greater tenacity and precision. It was also through philosophy that I gained an appreciation for the value of universal principles and abstract concepts, one that would be tested in women's studies, where I learned, instead, to value individual experience in all its messy particularity. It was through women's studies that I became sensitized to racial and sexual biases in a way that allowed me to recognize my right and responsibility to critique even the philosopher according to criteria that he might not even recognize as legitimate. My journey to becoming a professor in and chair of a philosophy department whose courses are nearly all writing intensive began in ignorance. Development philosophies, “what best serves the rich best serves the poor” failed, so did development aids, rural-oriented, man-mattered, gradual development, prioritizing the poor, poverty treatments, and the local involvement in development decision-making and planning. Social and economic ills are necessarily calling for the intermediate technology to address them particularly in the non-modern sectors. The Schumacherian development model is philosophical and normatively applicable in addressing the social and economic malaises, as being witnessed by it is popularly hybridized and mutated around the world. However, it could fail if practitioners are strangers, non-supportive and less prompt cooperation to each other.
