In this paper we review the most peculiar and interesting information-theoretic and communications features of fading channels. We first describe the statistical models of fading channels which are frequently used in the analysis and design of communication systems. Next, we focus on the information theory of fading channels, by emphasizing capacity as the most important performance measure. Both single-user and multiuser transmission are examined. Further, we describe how the structure of fading channels impacts code design, and finally overview equalization of fading multipath channels.

A bibliography on nonlinear system identification

The growth in wireless communications necessitates more efficient utilization of spectrum. The increased sharing of spectrum translates into a higher likelihood of users interfering with one another. Interference rejection techniques allow a high capacity of users within the available spectrum. This overview comprises a literature review of published papers pertaining to single-channel adaptive interference rejection in digital wireless dating primarily from 1980 to the present. Though previous overviews are referenced and summarized, the focus is on advances not covered by previous overviews (consequently, some papers are included that predate 1980 because they are not covered in previous overviews). An organizational chart (divided into spread spectrum and nonspread spectrum techniques) is shown which outlines the types of techniques covered. Interference rejection is important for several reasons. Cellular capacity is inherently interference limited, particularly by co-channel interference (CCI) and adjacent-channel interference (ACI). One solution to combat CCI and ACI is to split cells and decrease the power, but cell-splitting is expensive. Interference-rejection techniques often represent a less expensive alternative to cell-splitting. In addition, as newer communication technologies supersede older technologies, interference-rejection techniques are important in helping to facilitate compatibility during transitions between the old and new technologies.

Interference rejection in digital wireless communications

Spread spectrum (SS) communications offers a promising solution to an overcrowded frequency spectrum amid growing demand for mobile and personal communications services. The proposed overlay of spread spectrum signals on existing narrowband users implies strong interference for the SS system. The paper discusses how system performance can be improved by preprocessing to suppress narrowband interference. Linear prediction filters have been proposed since the 1980s for suppression of narrowband interference. Vijayan and Poor (1991) proposed nonlinear methods of suppressing the narrowband signal with significant increase in the SNR improvement. The present authors derive an enhancement to this nonlinear prediction and achieve further improvement by applying the technique to interpolating filter structures. Finally, they extend results to the case of multiple spread spectrum users and demonstrate how nonlinear filtering can dramatically outperform linear filtering. >

Narrowband interference suppression in CDMA spread spectrum communications

In a jump Markov linear system, the state matrix, observation matrix, and the noise covariance matrices evolve according to the realization of a finite state Markov chain. Given a realization of the observation process, the aim is to estimate the state of the Markov chain assuming known model parameters. Computing conditional mean estimates is infeasible as it involves a cost that grows exponentially with the number of observations. We present three expectation maximization (EM) algorithms for state estimation to compute maximum a posteriori (MAP) state sequence estimates [which are also known as Bayesian maximum likelihood state sequence estimates (MLSEs)]. The first EM algorithm yields the MAP estimate for the entire sequence of the finite state Markov chain. The second EM algorithm yields the MAP estimate of the (continuous) state of the jump linear system. The third EM algorithm computes the joint MAP estimate of the finite and continuous states. The three EM algorithms optimally combine a hidden Markov model (HMM) estimator and a Kalman smoother (KS) in three different ways to compute the desired MAP state sequence estimates. Unlike the conditional mean state estimates, which require computational cost exponential in the data length, the proposed iterative schemes are linear in the data length.

Expectation maximization algorithms for MAP estimation of jump Markov linear systems

The binary nature of direct-sequence signals is exploited to obtain nonlinear filters that outperform the linear filters hitherto used for this purpose. The case of a Gaussian interferer with known autoregressive parameters is considered. Using simulations, it is shown that an approximate conditional mean (ACM) filter of the Masreliez type performs significantly better than the optimum linear (Kalman-Bucy) filter. For the case of interferers with unknown parameters, the nature of the nonlinearity in the ACM filter is used to obtain an adaptive filtering algorithm that is identical to the linear transversal filter except that the previous prediction errors are transformed nonlinearly before being incorporated into the linear prediction. Two versions of this filter are considered: one in which the filter coefficients are updated using the Widrow LMS algorithm, and another in which the coefficients are updated using an approximate gradient algorithm. Simulations indicate that the nonlinear filter with LMS updates performs substantially better than the linear filter for both narrowband Gaussian and single-tone interferers, whereas the gradient algorithm gives slightly better performance for Gaussian interferers but is rather ineffective in suppressing a sinusoidal interferer. >
