Objetivo: identificar, na literatura, a eficacia do uso de serious games para a melhoria do conhecimento e/ou das mudancas de comportamentos em criancas com sobrepeso ou obesidade Metodo: realizou-se uma revisao sistematica da literatura Tomou-se como base o metodo para revisao sistematica da Cochrane Os estudos foram coletados nas bases de dados Public Medline, Web Of Science, ScienceDirect, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciencias da Saude, Health Games Research e Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature Utilizaramse os descritores “videogames” e “obesity” e a palavra-chave “serious games” Os criterios de inclusao estabelecidos foram: estudos classificados como ensaios clinicos randomizados, nos idiomas ingles, espanhol e portugues e que tivessem criancas como publico-alvo Resultados: 2746 estudos foram localizados na busca inicial e seis foram selecionados para a amostra final Os artigos focaram tanto no estimulo a mudancas de comportamento do jogador quanto no incentivo a atividade fisica e melhoria de habitos alimentares Os estudos mostraram que o uso de serious games como estrategia pode auxiliar positivamente no enfrentamento da obesidade infantil Conclusao: acredita-se que a pesquisa nessa area e uma estrategia em expansao e promissora e que tais jogos figuram como alternativas na educacao em saude de criancas

Serious games as an educational strategy to control childhood obesity: a systematic literature review

This paper presents a qualitative study of food-related practices among 16 childcare providers in the Puget Sound, and suggests opportunities for design intervention to promote healthy eating by young children. This paper makes two contributions to interactive systems design. We present childcare as an underexplored site for future research and design. We also describe social ecology systems theory, an approach to qualitative research from the public health field that is relatively uncommon in design research. We believe that the socio-ecological perspective is particularly applicable to design research that addresses human service provisioning, and may also prove useful in describing human cognition and designing interactive systems more generally.

What's for Lunch?: A Socio-ecological Approach to Childcare Nutrition

This work presents the design and evaluation of a set of three mini exercise games (exergames), called “Ellic’s Exercise Class,” which allows people to play in virtual reality (VR) using a head-mounted display (HMD) with the intention to promote physical activities. The exergames require the player to move hands, arms, and body to interact with sporting gameplay events. The game design methodology considers both display advantages and physical limitations in VR technologies. The games are evaluated in a usability study with the goal to understand participants’ performance, gaming experience, effectiveness in motivating them to move, and their exercise intensity levels. In the study, we compare play of games in a VR environment simulated through an HMD with the play in front of a standard large flat-screen display (LFD), while ensuring the difficulty level of gameplay to be same in both. The participants’ moving distances and their answers in questionnaires show that they become more active and engaged when playing exergames with HMD, but according to heart rate data, there is not significant evidence that playing with HMD would be better than that with LFD in terms of increasing the energy expenditure. We discuss the findings in accordance with the relationship and independence between engagement and exertion in exergaming.

Ellic’s Exercise Class: promoting physical activities during exergaming with immersive virtual reality

Obesity among children and adolescents is increasingly becoming a major public health problem. Poverty and lower socio-economic status as well as lack of parental awareness regarding a balanced diet and adequate exercise all contribute towards childhood obesity. Unfortunately minority children have been especially vulnerable, among them inner-city Latino children continue to have the highest incidence rates of overweight and obesity; hence targeted intervention for this population group is of paramount importance. Access and affordability of smartphones and mobile internet devices provide an opportunity to create nutrition education interventions that can significantly impact and change attitude and knowledge regarding healthy diet and exercise. In this paper we present the design of a comic book style interactive storytelling mobile application that creates multiple cause and effect scenarios that the child can role play and learn from. The novelty and innovation lies in the design of the application to begin at a clinical setting while requiring completion at home and involving significant participation by the parent and the child

Interactive Cause and Effect Comic-book Storytelling for Improving Nutrition Outcomes in Children

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a hybrid clinic plus home based intervention targeting Latino children to improve obesity outcomes. The intervention applies motivational game based learning and behavior change theories during design. Latino American children are the main target group for this study as they have significantly high obesity rates due to socio-economic conditions and lack of awareness. There have been several interventions that have targeted game based strategies in the clinic to promote health outcomes and some have even targeted obesity problems, however to our knowledge this is the first effort that adds an in-home component to the clinical intervention. We discuss in detail the challenges faced while designing and implementing this hybrid clinical trial. Finally, we present the evaluation results from a randomized clinical trial that recruited 101 children.

Design, implementation and evaluation of a game-based intervention targeting Latino children for improving obesity outcomes

This paper presents the design and usability testing results for a home-based virtual reality game system that aims to promote exercise with the spin machine. The novelty of our approach lies in the design of the game mechanics that promote increased calorific output among the participants and the ease of setup with any commercially available Virtual Reality (VR) sensor. The paper describes the motivation behind the developed system, the design details of the games created to promote the use of the system and the results from a usability test conducted with 37 participants.

Towards a Home-based Virtual Reality Game System to Promote Exercise

This Innovative Practice Work in Progress presents a proposal to promote the use of information technologies for students through decision center visualizations in order to facilitate their analysis process of information related to real life problems. To improve the students’ learning process, Tecnologico de Monterrey University designed and implemented a set of challenges and curriculum within the Tec21 educational model. It focuses on the creation and development of classes that allow students face real world challenges with the use of the different information technology tools available. As part of this, is the creation of the decision-making laboratory that seeks to support the analysis, visualization and interaction of information in a decision-making process. The decision-making laboratory, together with the department of computational sciences, designed a challenge that aims to carry out the analysis and visualization of open data concerning the urban mobility problem in the financial and corporate center of Mexico City. It was designed for students enrolled in the last third of the Computer Science major. This paper presents the implementation process and the encouraging results through the use of a decision-making laboratory to create and use specialized visualizations regarding an urban mobility problem in Mexico City.
