The electronic structure of the perovskite LaCoO$_3$ for different spin states of Co ions was calculated in the LDA+U approach. The ground state was found to be a nonmagnetic insulator with Co ions in a low-spin state. Somewhat higher in energy we found two intermediate-spin states followed by a high-spin state at significantly higher energy. The calculation results show that Co 3$d$ states of $t_{2g}$ symmetry form narrow bands which could easily localize whilst $e_g$ orbitals, due to their strong hybridization with the oxygen 2$p$ states, form a broad $\sigma^*$ band. With the increase of temperature which is simulated by the corresponding increase of the lattice parameter, the transition from the low- to intermediate-spin states occurs. This intermediate-spin (occupation $t_{2g}^5e_g^1$) can develop an orbital ordering which can account for the nonmetallic nature of LaCoO$_3$ at 90 K$<$T$<$500 K. Possible explanations of the magnetic behavior and gradual insulating-metal transition are suggested.

The stand-alone pathogenicity of fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) had long been disputed, given the ubiquity of the viruses versus sporadic outbreaks, and variation between experimental studies. However, a globally emerging trend of FAdV-associated diseases has marked the past two decades, with hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome mainly in Asia besides Arabian and Latin American countries, and geographically more disseminated outbreaks of inclusion body hepatitis. Finally, the appearance of FAdV-induced gizzard erosion (AGE) in Asia and Europe completed the range of diseases. Epidemiological studies confirmed serotype FAdV-4 as agent of hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome, whereas inclusion body hepatitis is related to FAdV-2, -8a, -8b and -11. Members of the biologically more distant serotype FAdV-1 induce AGE. Urged by increasing problems in the field, numerous pathogenicity studies with FAdVs from outbreaks substantiated the primary aetiologic role of particular strains for distinct clinical conditions. Developments in the poultry industry towards highly specialized genetic breeds and rigorous biosecurity additionally contribute to the growing incidence of FAdV-related diseases. Confirming field observations, recent studies connected a higher susceptibility of broilers with their distinct physiology, implying the choice of bird type as a factor to be considered in infection studies. Furthermore, elevated biosecurity standards have generated immunologically naive breeding stocks, putting broilers at risk in face of vertical FAdV transmission. Therefore, future prevention strategies should include adequate antibodies in breeders prior to production and - if necessary - vaccination, in order to protect progenies. This review aims to deliver a detailed overview on the current global situation about FAdV-induced diseases, their reproduction in vivo and vaccination strategies.

Fowl adenovirus-induced diseases and strategies for their control - a review on the current global situation

Listeriosis is a disease that causes septicemia or encephalitis in humans, animals and birds. Although, the disease is rare and sporadic in poultry but if occurs then causes septicemia or sometimes localized encephalitis. Occasionally, the disease is seen in young chicks and the causative agent, like in humans and animals, is Listeria monocytogenes. The organism is capable to infect almost all animals and poultry; however, outbreaks of listeriosis are infrequent in birds. It is widely distributed among avian species and chickens, turkeys, waterfowl (geese, ducks), game birds, pigeons, parrots, wood grouse, snowy owl, eagle, canaries, which appear to be the most commonly affected. Chickens are thought to be the carriers of Listeria and also the prime reservoirs for the infection and thus contaminate the litter and environment of the poultry production units. Listeriosis is often noticed along with other poultry diseases such as coccidiosis, infectious coryza, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis and parasitic infections, signifying the opportunistic nature of the organism. Intestinal colonization of poultry and the presence of L. monocytogenes in feces represent a potential source of the organism for listeriosis in ruminants. Man gets infection from raw broiler meat due to Listeria contamination and unhygienic conditions of the processing area, rather than acquiring direct infection from birds. With the changing food habits of the people, the health consciousness is also increasing and since listeriosis has now been recognized as an emerging food borne zoonoses. Therefore, this review has been compiled to make aware the poultry producers and the consumers of poultry meat/products regarding the importance of the disease and its public health significance.

The polypeptide pattern of a local isolate of a virus causing hydropericardium syndrome was analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A total of 12 polypeptides ranging in molecular weight between 13.8 and 110.0 kDa were observed. Western blot analysis of structural polypeptides revealed seven immunogenic polypeptides ranging in molecular weight between 15.8 and 110.0 kDa.
