Abstract: Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been linked to extreme core-collapse supernovae from massive stars. Gravitational waves (GW) offer a probe of the physics behind long GRBs. We investigate models of long-lived (~10-1000s) GW emission associated with the accretion disk of a collapsed star or with its protoneutron star remnant. Using data from LIGO's fifth science run, and GRB triggers from the swift experiment, we perform a search for unmodeled long-lived GW transients. Finding no evidence of GW emission, we place 90% confidence level upper limits on the GW fluence at Earth from long GRBs for three waveforms inspired by a model of GWs from accretion disk instabilities. These limits range from F<3.5 ergs cm^-2 to $F<1200 ergs cm^-2, depending on the GRB and on the model, allowing us to probe optimistic scenarios of GW production out to distances as far as ~33 Mpc. Advanced detectors are expected to achieve strain sensitivities 10x better than initial LIGO, potentially allowing us to probe the engines of the nearest long GRBs.

Abstract: We report results from a search for gravitational waves produced by perturbed intermediate mass black holes (IMBH) in data collected by LIGO and Virgo between 2005 and 2010. The search was sensitive to astrophysical sources that produced damped sinusoid gravitational wave signals, also known as ringdowns, with frequency $50\le f_{0}/\mathrm{Hz} \le 2000$ and decay timescale $0.0001\lesssim \tau/\mathrm{s} \lesssim 0.1$ characteristic of those produced in mergers of IMBH pairs. No significant gravitational wave candidate was detected. We report upper limits on the astrophysical coalescence rates of IMBHs with total binary mass $50 \le M/\mathrm{M}_\odot \le 450$ and component mass ratios of either 1:1 or 4:1. For systems with total mass $100 \le M/\mathrm{M}_\odot \le 150$, we report a 90%-confidence upper limit on the rate of binary IMBH mergers with non-spinning and equal mass components of $6.9\times10^{-8}\,$Mpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$. We also report a rate upper limit for ringdown waveforms from perturbed IMBHs, radiating 1% of their mass as gravitational waves in the fundamental, $\ell=m=2$, oscillation mode, that is nearly three orders of magnitude more stringent than previous results.

Abstract: In this study, Co–Ni layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets are synthesized on nickel foam (NF) using a simple, facile, and cost effective electrochemical deposition method. We present a comparative study of Co–Ni LDH nanosheets on NF for use in supercapacitor electrodes. The method is based on electrochemical deposition using cyclic voltammetry (CV) with different cycles (4, 6, 8, and 10 cycles). Compared to other cycles, the Co–Ni LDH nanosheets on NF as electrode materials obtained higher specific capacitance at eight cycles. In 1 M potassium hydroxide (KOH), a significant specific capacitance of 3130.8 F/g was obtained at a scan rate of 5 mV/s, with good cyclic stability of 72.4% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles. The uniform and porous structure of Co–Ni LDH nanosheets on NF and the fast ion transfer between the electrolyte–electrode interface and reduced resistance contribute to this superior electrochemical efficiency, confirmed by CV and electrochemical impedance (EIS) studies. Co–Ni LDH nanosheets on NF are promising candidates for low-cost high-efficiency energy storage electrode materials for supercapacitor applications because of their superior performance and ease of preparation.

Abstract: Aim To determine the efficacy of positron emission tomography-computed tomography using F-18 fluoro-deoxy-glucose (F-18 FDG PET-CT) in diagnosing the recurrence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in patients treated earlier with partial or radical nephrectomy. Methods We assessed 63 patients with suspected recurrent RCC after nephrectomy. PET-CT findings were interpreted as positive if the focal area of FDG uptake in the abdomen or outside the abdomen was more than the surrounding background tissue. The final diagnosis of the recurrence of RCC was based on histological examination and/or clinical follow-up and conventional imaging modalities. Results A total of 103 PET-CT studies were done in these 63 patients, of which 63 studies were true positive, 30 studies were true negative, seven studies were false negative and remaining three studies were false positive. In 63 true-positive scans, PET-CT showed 109 lesions. Of these, 28 lesions were in the lungs, 21 lesions were at a locoregional site, 21 were in the bones, 12 in the retroperitoneal lymph nodes and 27 at other sites. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of PET-CT were 90, 91 and 90%, respectively. Conclusion Our results seem to confirm the useful role of PET-CT in the evaluation of post-surgical recurrence in patients who had undergone radical surgery for RCC.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE. Skeletal muscle 18F-FDG uptake on PET/CT can be either physiologic or related to a variety of different pathologic conditions. FDG PET/CT can be used for assessment of primary and metastatic tumors and infective or inflammatory conditions affecting the musculature. CONCLUSION. In this article, we describe the various causes and patterns of skeletal muscle FDG uptake. Familiarity with these patterns is essential for proper interpretation of clinical FDG PET/CT images.

Abstract: Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a major public health problem. It is the fourth leading cause of chronic morbidity and mortality in the United States, and is projected to rank fifth in 2020 in burden of disease worldwide, according to a study published by the World Bank/World Health Organization. Yet, COPD remains relatively unknown or ignored by the public as well as public health and government officials. In 1998, in an effort to bring more attention to COPD, its management, and its prevention, a committed group of scientists encouraged the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the World Health Organization to form the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). Among the important objectives of GOLD are to increase awareness of COPD and to help the millions of people who suffer from this disease and die prematurely of it or its complications. The first step in the GOLD program was to prepare a consensus report, Global Strategy for the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of COPD, published in 2001. The present, newly revised document follows the same format as the original consensus report, but has been updated to reflect the many publications on COPD that have appeared. GOLD national leaders, a network of international experts, have initiated investigations of the causes and prevalence of COPD in their countries, and developed innovative approaches for the dissemination and implementation of COPD management guidelines. We appreciate the enormous amount of work the GOLD national leaders have done on behalf of their patients with COPD. Despite the achievements in the 5 years since the GOLD report was originally published, considerable additional work is ahead of us if we are to control this major public health problem. The GOLD initiative will continue to bring COPD to the attention of governments, public health officials, health care workers, and the general public, but a concerted effort by all involved in health care will be necessary.
