Estimates of global seasonal influenza-associated respiratory mortality: a modelling study

A. Danielle Iuliano, +138 more
- 13 Dec 2017 -
TL;DR: These global influenza-associated respiratory mortality estimates are higher than previously reported, suggesting that previous estimates might have underestimated disease burden.
Journal ArticleDOI

Distribution of sialic acid receptors and influenza A virus of avian and swine origin in experimentally infected pigs

TL;DR: The results indicated that the distribution of influenza A virus receptors in pigs are similar to that of humans and therefore challenge the theory that the pig acts as a mixing vessel between human and avian influenza viruses.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interim 2017/18 influenza seasonal vaccine effectiveness: Combined results from five European studies

TL;DR: Interim results from five European studies indicate that, in all age groups, 2017/18 influenza vaccine effectiveness was 25 to 52% against any influenza, and 55 to 68% against influenza A(H1N1)pdm09.
Journal ArticleDOI

European all-cause excess and influenza-attributable mortality in the 2017/18 season: should the burden of influenza B be reconsidered?

TL;DR: The high mortality among elderly was unexpected in an influenza B dominated season, which commonly are considered to cause mild illness, mainly among children, and the common perception of influenza B only having a modest impact on excess mortality in the older population may be reconsidered.
