Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and characterization of asthma in hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients with COVID-19.
Krishan D. Chhiba,Gayatri B. Patel,Thanh Huyen T. Vu,Michael M. Chen,Amina Guo,Elizabeth Kudlaty,Quan Mai,Chen Yeh,Lutfiyya N. Muhammad,Kathleen E. Harris,Bruce S. Bochner,Leslie C. Grammer,Paul A. Greenberger,Ravi Kalhan,Fei Li Kuang,Carol A. Saltoun,Robert P. Schleimer,Whitney W. Stevens,Anju T. Peters +18 more
TL;DR: Despite a substantial prevalence of asthma in the COVID-19 cohort, asthma was not associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and the ongoing use of ICS did not increase the risk ofospitalization in a similar adjusted model.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association between marijuana exposure and pulmonary function over 20 years.
Mark J. Pletcher,Eric Vittinghoff,Ravi Kalhan,Joshua S. Richman,Joshua S. Richman,Monika M. Safford,Stephen Sidney,Feng Lin,Stefan G. Kertesz,Stefan G. Kertesz +9 more
TL;DR: Occasional and low cumulative marijuana use was not associated with adverse effects on pulmonary function, and tobacco exposure, both current and lifetime, was linearly associated with lower FEV(1) and FVC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Endobronchial Coils vs Usual Care on Exercise Tolerance in Patients With Severe Emphysema: The RENEW Randomized Clinical Trial
Frank C. Sciurba,Gerard J. Criner,Charlie Strange,Pallav L. Shah,Gaetane Michaud,Timothy A Connolly,Gaëtan Deslée,William P Tillis,Antoine Delage,Charles-Hugo Marquette,Ganesh Krishna,Ravi Kalhan,J. Scott Ferguson,Michael A. Jantz,Fabien Maldonado,Robert McKenna,Adnan Majid,Navdeep S. Rai,Mark T. Dransfield,Luis F. Angel,Roger A. Maxfield,Felix J.F. Herth,Momen M. Wahidi,Atul C. Mehta,Dirk-Jan Slebos +24 more
TL;DR: Among patients with emphysema and severe hyperinflation treated for 12 months, the use of endobronchial coils compared with usual care resulted in an improvement in median exercise tolerance that was modest and of uncertain clinical importance, with a higher likelihood of major complications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Underuse of lung protective ventilation: analysis of potential factors to explain physician behavior.
Ravi Kalhan,Mark E. Mikkelsen,Pali M Dedhiya,Jason D. Christie,Christine Gaughan,Paul N. Lanken,Barbara Finkel,Robert Gallop,Barry D. Fuchs +8 more
TL;DR: Ventilation with a low TV was used in a minority of patients with acute lung injury, despite results published in 1998 and 2000 supporting this approach, which may be related to clinicians’ underrecognition of less severe cases of ALI, their reserving of low-TV ventilation for more severe cases, or both.
Journal ArticleDOI
Categorization and impact of pulmonary hypertension in patients with advanced COPD.
Michael J. Cuttica,Ravi Kalhan,Oksana A. Shlobin,Shahzad Ahmad,Mark T. Gladwin,Roberto F. Machado,Scott D. Barnett,Steven D. Nathan +7 more
TL;DR: PH is common in advanced COPD and is associated with functional impairment and an increased mortality risk, and Stratification by RHC determined pulmonary hemodynamics appears important in distinguishing distinct clinical phenotypes.
