TL;DR: In this article, the extent to which academic staff members in tertiary institutions in Nigeria access research grants, and to bring to light the factors that hinder their effort to accessing research grants were investigated.
Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which academic staff members in tertiary institutions in Nigeria access research grants, and to bring to light the factors that hinder their effort to accessing research grants. Design/methodology/approach An online questionnaire was designed using the SurveyMonkey software to collect the qualitative data from academic staff in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Findings The study revealed that only a few number of academic staff members in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria have received research grants. The study also revealed that a large number of research works carried out by academic staff are funded by themselves from the meager salary they receive. It also emerged that Tertiary Education Trust Fund is the highest funding body that academic staff have received research grants from. Different research funding agencies/organizations both local and international that support studies in Nigeria were also mentioned to create awareness for others to utilize. Politics in the selection of research proposals, inadequate publicity/advertisement for research grants applications and lack of knowledge about funding agencies/organizations were identified as the most mentioned hindrances to accessing research grants in Nigeria. Research limitations/implications A limitation of this study is the low response rate obtained, considering the number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria which does not permit generalization. The low response rate suggests that responding to an online questionnaire is not high on the agenda of academic staff members in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, and this is a major challenge for researchers undertaking evidence-based research considering the number of institutions. Practical/implications The findings will provide academic staff with important data and insight into the various local and international research funding agencies/organizations that support research in Nigeria. Social/implications Academic staff members receiving research grants will enable them find a solution to societal problems through evidence-based research. The findings of this study will inform other academic staff of the various research funding agencies/organizations that support research in Nigeria. This will create awareness for them to access such grants. Originality/value The work is an original research work conducted by the researchers. The findings will add to the body of knowledge on the area of research funding in Nigeria.

TL;DR: The ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics (ALTS) annual survey as discussed by the authors has seen a 19.8% increase in survey participation over the past four years, along with this increased participation comes a better understanding of what is happening in academic libraries and more impactful data for participants and researchers.
Abstract: The editorial board of the ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics (ALTS) Annual Survey is thrilled to announce a 19.8% increase in survey participation over the past 4 years. Along with this increased participation comes a better understanding of what is happening in academic libraries and more impactful data for participants and researchers. Survey participants receive a complimentary link to summary data on the ACRLMetrics website. A subscription to ACRLMetrics provides access to all ALTS data starting from 1999 to present. A print edition of the 2018 data is also available for purchase through the ALA Store. This article highlights some of the findings from the 2018 survey and identifies valuable ways the data from the survey can be used.

TL;DR: This contribution will focus on the aims of the Rare Books’ Section of the Vatican Library, taking as a start the analytical cataloging of incunabula, which will deal with similar cataloged of the books printed in the 16th century and later.
Abstract: This contribution will focus on the aims of the Rare Books’ Section of the Vatican Library. Taking as a start the analytical cataloging of incunabula, the Section will deal with similar cataloging of the books printed in the 16th century and later. Analytical cataloging requires deep skill in reading and interpreting the features which bear witness to the book’s journey through history: handwritten notes, coats of arms, owners’ identification, printers’ marks, bindings, etc.In recent years, the Section also takes part in the rare books’ digitization project known as “Project Polonsky”. Thanks to digitization, scholars from all over the world will be able to see the rare incunabula preserved in the Vatican Library.

TL;DR: The results show how the collaborating participants overcome emerging difficulties by complying with cultural norms and supporting each other, and how the contradictions in the organization as well as in the transfer of competence and sharing of resources affect their collaboration.
Abstract: Abstract This article aims to explore the aims, ways of working, and problems related to local information within a network of collaborating provincial university libraries in Thailand (PULINET). By applying a theoretical framework of the activity theory and qualitative approach to explore the interaction of activity systems involved in common projects, the article identifies contradictions within separate nodes, between the nodes, and between the collaborating systems. The results show how the collaborating participants overcome emerging difficulties by complying with cultural norms and supporting each other, and how the contradictions in the organization as well as in the transfer of competence and sharing of resources affect their collaboration.
