Background: Sleeping is one of the basic needs of human beings and sleep quality is affected by individuals’ general health. This study aimed to assess sleep quality and general health in the elderly population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 elderly individuals in Lar (40 individuals living in nursing homes and 80 ones living in their houses). The individuals living in their houses were selected through multi-stage sampling. Sleep quality and general health were evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), respectively. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews. Then, the data were entered into the SPSS statistical software, version 20 and were analyzed using chi-square test, independent t-test, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The score of sleep quality was significantly higher in the elderly individuals living in their houses compared to those living in nursing homes (P=0.012). Besides, 61.7% of the participants showed undesirable general health. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was found between sleep quality and general health (r=0.382, P<0.001). Conclusion: Based on the results, the elderly individuals had undesirable sleep quality and general health. Considering the lower sleep quality and general health in the elderly individuals living in nursing homes, they have to be provided with more attention and support. Measures, such as psychological counseling and health education, are necessary in order to promote this group’s general health and sleep quality.

Comparison of Sleep Quality and General Health in Elderly Individuals Living in their Houses and Nursing Homes

Background and Aim: Population aging in most of developed countries should be subjective to more attention, regarding health issues of aging group. Different organizations and institutions have launched several programs related to elderly center. This paper is aimed to compare performance of different programs of active organizations in the field of elderly care in Iran. Materials and Methods: This overview of research, used library resources and online databases Proquest, Pub med, Science Direct, Ovid and Scientific Information databases using keywords that Aged care services, relevant organizations, and Iran. Results: There are various classifications of geriatric services. However, these services can be divided into three groups including infrastructure, social services, and health care and preventive services according to concept, level and type of services. Conclusion: In Iran, agencies and institutions relevant to elderly, take measures to support elderly people given their current tasks and allocated budget. But, these measures do not seem adequate, because solving aging problem, as a problem with evident influences which its impacts will be intensified in future, requires responsibility and cooperation of more agencies and public institutions.

Aged Care and Services Programs in Iran: Looking at the Performance of Relevant Organizations

Population Ageing and the Elderly.

Background and Objective:The global increase of the old population has changed into a crisis. The elderly' population low level of health literacy, introduced as a global issue in the 21st century, is considered as a common global problem. Health-promoting self-care behaviors are directly related to the health of the elderly and their quality of life by reducing the mortality and morbidity rates. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between health literacy and self-care among the old population in Yazd, Iran. Materials and Methods:  This cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 elderly people in Yazd. The participants were selected using cluster sampling method. The data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, a researcher-made questionnaire over self-care behaviors, and Health Literacy for Iranian Adults' questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS20 (SPSS, Inc. Chicago, USA) using descriptive and inferential statistical tests. Results: The participants' average age was 66 years. The studied elderly people achieved 79.5% and 65.7% of the maximum attainable levels of the health literacy and self-care scores, respectively. A direct correlation was observed between the health literacy and self-care scores. Conclusion: Regarding the moderate level of self-care in the elderly people and its relationship with health literacy, appropriate educational interventions are required for the elderlies and their families in the field of health literacy. These trainings should be aimed to improve the old people' self-care and responsiveness with regard to various diseases by increasing their health literacy.

Is Higher Health Literacy Associated with Better Self-Care in the Elderly?

Background: Given the debilitating nature of heart failure, all aspects of life including quality of life should be considered in the care of patients with this problem. This study aimed to assess the quality of life and related demographic characteristics in elderly patients with heart failure.
Methods: The participants in this cross-sectional study were 135 elderly people aged 60 years and older with heart failure admitted to teaching hospitals of Guilan University of Medical Sciences in 2018. The patients were selected using convenience sampling. The data in this study were collected using a demographic information questionnaire and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA at a significance level of less than 0.05 (P<0.05).
Results: The results showed that the mean of the total quality of life in the elderly was 61.5±15.62 from 126; and the mean scores for the physical, psychological, and socio-economic subscales of quality of life were 27.7±9.58, 12.2±2.80, and 21.5±5.65, respectively. Most of the elderly reported average quality of life and socioeconomic status, and high physical, and psychological health. It was also found that the patients’ quality of life had a significant relation with income (p<0.038), the number of admissions due to heart failure and non-heart diseases (p<0.001), and chronic diseases (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The majority of patients under study reported a moderate quality of life. Adopting preventive policies, identifying high-risk patients, and planning for therapeutic and nursing interventions will improve the quality of life for this group of patients.
