Abstract: This paper considers the downlink of a cache- enabled fog radio access network (F-RAN) with limited fronthaul capacity, where user association (UA), data delivery rate (DDR) and signal precoding are jointly optimized. We formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem in which the weighted difference of network throughput and total power consumption is maximized, subject to the predefined DDR requirements and the maximum transmit power at each eRRH. To address this challenging problem, we first apply the l0-norm approximation and l1-norm minimization techniques to deal with the UA. After this key step, we arrive at an approximated problem that only involves the joint optimization of DDR and precoding. By using the alternating descent method, we further decompose this problem into a convex subproblem for DDR allocation and a nonconvex subproblem for precoding design. While the former is globally solved by the interior-point method, the latter is solved by a specifically tailored successive convex quadratic programming method. Finally, we propose an iterative algorithm for the original joint optimization that is guaranteed to converge. Importantly, each iteration of the developed algorithm only involves solving simple convex problems. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed design significantly improves both throughput and power performances, especially in practical F-RANs with limited fronthaul capacity. Compared to the sole precoder design for a given cache placement, our joint design is shown to improve the throughput by 50% while saving at least half of the total power consumption in the considered examples.

Abstract: Non-minimum phase zeros emit the achievable performance and robustness of a feedback control loop. These limitations can be expressed as an upper limit on the bandwidth that may be achieved without necessarily incurring a large peak in closed loop sensitivity. In the case of preview control, it is known that advance (or anti-causal) knowledge of the reference to be tracked permits accurate, rapid tracking over bandwidths which exceed the normal performance limits. The first aim of this paper is to explain this apparent paradox. In addition, we briefly discuss sensitivity and robustness issues for preview control systems.

Abstract: Calcium ions act as messengers in a broad range of processes such as learning, apoptosis, and muscular movement. The transient profile and the temporal accumulation of calcium signals have been suggested as the two main characteristics in which calcium cues encode messages to be forwarded to downstream pathways. We address the analytical quantification of calcium temporal-accumulation in a long, thin section of a nonexcitable cell by solving a boundary value problem. In these expressions we note that the cytosolic Ca $^{2+}$ accumulation is independent of every intracellular calcium flux and depends on the Ca $^{2+}$ exchange across the membrane, cytosolic calcium diffusion, geometry of the cell, extracellular calcium perturbation, and initial concentrations. In particular, we analyse the time-integrated response of cytosolic calcium due to i) a localised initial concentration of cytosolic calcium and ii) transient extracellular perturbation of calcium. In these scenarios, we conclude that i) the range of calcium progression is confined to the vicinity of the initial concentration, thereby creating calcium microdomains; and ii) we observe a low-pass filtering effect in the response driven by extracellular Ca $^{2+}$ perturbations. Additionally, we note that our methodology can be used to analyse a broader range of stimuli and scenarios.

Abstract: Stable plant poles can either be shifted by feedback, or they can be approximately canceled by a controller. While it is known that the canceling design impacts on the transients due to input disturbances, it seems little appreciated that the alternative, i.e. the shifting design, impacts on closed loop robustness. In this paper we show that shifting stable poles, rather than canceling them, increases the l/sub 1/, H/sub /spl infin// and the point-wise in frequency norms of the complementary sensitivity. Thus, the choice to either cancel or shift any one stable pole emerges as a design issue that requires a deliberate trade-off between input disturbance response and robustness.

Abstract: Machine Learning is the study of methods for programming computers to learn. Computers are applied to a wide range of tasks, and for most of these it is relatively easy for programmers to design and implement the necessary software. However, there are many tasks for which this is difficult or impossible. These can be divided into four general categories. First, there are problems for which there exist no human experts. For example, in modern automated manufacturing facilities, there is a need to predict machine failures before they occur by analyzing sensor readings. Because the machines are new, there are no human experts who can be interviewed by a programmer to provide the knowledge necessary to build a computer system. A machine learning system can study recorded data and subsequent machine failures and learn prediction rules. Second, there are problems where human experts exist, but where they are unable to explain their expertise. This is the case in many perceptual tasks, such as speech recognition, hand-writing recognition, and natural language understanding. Virtually all humans exhibit expert-level abilities on these tasks, but none of them can describe the detailed steps that they follow as they perform them. Fortunately, humans can provide machines with examples of the inputs and correct outputs for these tasks, so machine learning algorithms can learn to map the inputs to the outputs. Third, there are problems where phenomena are changing rapidly. In finance, for example, people would like to predict the future behavior of the stock market, of consumer purchases, or of exchange rates. These behaviors change frequently, so that even if a programmer could construct a good predictive computer program, it would need to be rewritten frequently. A learning program can relieve the programmer of this burden by constantly modifying and tuning a set of learned prediction rules. Fourth, there are applications that need to be customized for each computer user separately. Consider, for example, a program to filter unwanted electronic mail messages. Different users will need different filters. It is unreasonable to expect each user to program his or her own rules, and it is infeasible to provide every user with a software engineer to keep the rules up-to-date. A machine learning system can learn which mail messages the user rejects and maintain the filtering rules automatically. Machine learning addresses many of the same research questions as the fields of statistics, data mining, and psychology, but with differences of emphasis. Statistics focuses on understanding the phenomena that have generated the data, often with the goal of testing different hypotheses about those phenomena. Data mining seeks to find patterns in the data that are understandable by people. Psychological studies of human learning aspire to understand the mechanisms underlying the various learning behaviors exhibited by people (concept learning, skill acquisition, strategy change, etc.).

Abstract: Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Abstract: I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book.
