Interpretation of cone penetration tests — a unified approach

Leachate and groundwater samples were collected from Gazipur landfill-site and its adjacent area to study the possible impact of leachate percolation on groundwater quality. Concentration of various physico-chemical parameters including heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn) and microbiological parameters (total coliform (TC) and faecal coliform (FC)) were determined in groundwater and leachate samples. The moderately high concentrations of Cl-, NO3(-), SO4(2-), NH4(+), Phenol, Fe, Zn and COD in groundwater, likely indicate that groundwater quality is being significantly affected by leachate percolation. Further they proved to be as tracers for groundwater contamination. The effect of depth and distance of the well from the pollution source was also investigated. The presence of TC and FC in groundwater warns for the groundwater quality and thus renders the associated aquifer unreliable for domestic water supply and other uses. Although some remedial measures are suggested to reduce further groundwater contamination via leachate percolation, the present study demand for the proper management of waste in Delhi.

Leachate Characterization and Assessment of Groundwater Pollution Near Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Site

This lecture describes the latest findings with respect to the long-term performance of modern municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill barrier systems. Field data relating to the clogging of leachate collection systems and the latest techniques for predicting their performance are examined. It is indicated that the primary leachate collection systems may have service lives that range from less than a decade to more than a century, depending on the design details, waste characteristics and mode of operation. Recent data indicate that landfill liner temperatures can be expected to reach at least 30–40°C for normal landfill operations. With recirculation of leachate the liner temperature increases faster than under normal operating conditions, and may be expected to exceed 40°C. Temperatures (up to 40–60°C) may occur at the base of landfills where there is a significant leachate mound. Long-term performance of contaminant barrier systems

Observations from recent earthquakes and the results of cyclic tests indicate that the Chinese criteria are not reliable for determining the liquefaction susceptibility of fine-grained soils. Fine-grained soils that liquefied during the 1994 Northridge, 1999 Kocaeli, and 1999 Chi-Chi earthquakes often did not meet the clay-size criterion of the Chinese criteria. Cyclic testing of a wide range of soils found to liquefy in Adapazari during the Kocaeli earthquake confirmed that these fine-grained soils were susceptible to liquefaction. It is not the amount of “clay-size” particles in the soil; rather, it is the amount and type of clay minerals in the soil that best indicate liquefaction susceptibility. Thus plasticity index (PI) is a better indicator of liquefaction susceptibility. Estimating liquefaction induced ground settlements from CPT for level ground

A semiempirical approach to estimate liquefaction-induced lateral displacements using standard penetration test (SPT) or cone penetration test (CPT) data is presented. The approach combines available SPT- and CPT-based methods to evaluate liquefaction potential with laboratory test results for clean sands to estimate the potential maximum cyclic shear strains for saturated sandy soils under seismic loading. A lateral displacement index is then introduced, which is obtained by integrating the maximum cyclic shear strains with depth. Empirical correlations from case history data are proposed between actual lateral displacement, the lateral displacement index, and geometric parameters characterizing ground geometry for gently sloping ground without a free face, level ground with a free face, and gently sloping ground with a free face. The proposed approach can be applied to obtain preliminary estimates of the magnitude of lateral displacements associated with a liquefaction-induced lateral spread.
