In lifetesting, medical follow-up, and other fields the observation of the time of occurrence of the event of interest (called a death) may be prevented for some of the items of the sample by the previous occurrence of some other event (called a loss). Losses may be either accidental or controlled, the latter resulting from a decision to terminate certain observations. In either case it is usually assumed in this paper that the lifetime (age at death) is independent of the potential loss time; in practice this assumption deserves careful scrutiny. 1423 pancreaticoduodenectomies for pancreatic cancer: A single-institution experience.

On the basis of experience with calculated survivorships of patients following treatment for cancer, a simple function, in terms of two physically meaningful parameters, has been evolved, which fits such survivorship data very well. These two parameters can be used to compare succinctly the mortality of two groups, different in respect of treatment, type of cancer, or other characteristics. The parameters are c (“cured”), which represents the proportion of the population which is subject only to “normal” death rates, and β, which is the death rate from the cancer, to which the rest of the population [not “cured,” (1–c)] is subject. Thus if one treatment is characterized by c 1 = 0.30, β 1 = 0.25, another by c 2 = 0.20, β 2 = 0.15, this could be interpreted as meaning that while the first treatment “cured” a larger proportion of the population than did the second treatment, it did not ameliorate the deaths attributable to cancer in the patients not cured as much as did the second treatment. In 1946, Parker and co-workers 1 reported observations on 3,440 patients with angina pectoris seen at Mayo Clinic from Jan. 1, 1927, through Dec. 31, 1936. Their report dealt essentially with survival rates. Because of the wide interest evoked by that report, we are reporting further follow-up studies on these patients and observations on an additional 3,442 patients with angina pectoris seen at this clinic during the subsequent 8 years, the minimal follow-up period being 5 years. There have been few reports of long term observations on large groups of patients with angina pectoris. Some reports have included only those patients dead at the time of the report. In 1910, Herrick and Nuzum 2 reported on 200 patients. One fourth of these were dead, the disease having lasted on the average slightly less than 3 years. Prognosis of angina pectoris; observations in 6,882 cases.

A controlled double-blind study of five orally administered antiemetic agents and a placebo was carried out during the administration to patients of a known emetic agent, fluorouracil. One hundred eighty patients were observed during their first course of treatment with fluorouracil and 120 patients during their second course. Thiopropazate and prochlorperazine showed a statistically significant therapeutic advantage over the placebo. Pipamazine, cinnarizine, and trimethobenzamide were progressively less effective, although each appeared to exert some antiemetic effect. Those agents showing the greatest antiemetic potency also showed the highest incidence of oversedation.
