TL;DR: In this paper, the utility of ultrasound in the prenatal diagnosis of many congenital anomalies is well established, but its accuracy in detecting craniofacial malformations has not been examined in a large series.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the levels of alpha hCG are a sensitive marker for placental well-being, and that it could serve as an additional diagnostic tool for the early diagnosis of EP.
Abstract: Plasma free αhCG, estradiol(E2), and progesterone (P4) concentrations were measured in 38 patients with histologically confirmed ectopic pregnancy (EP). The menstrual gestational ages ranged from 6–10 weeks. Free αhCG levels, although significantly lower than those in women with a normal intrauterine pregnancy, increased markedly during this time period, from 1.5 to 11 ng/ml, a 7-fold increase. In women with an intrauterine pregnancy, only 0.6-fold increase occurred during the same time period. Plasma P4 and E2 concentrations in patients with EP were significantly lower, except at 6 weeks for E2 and in the sixth and seventh weeks for P4. The ectopically implanted trophoblast undergoes impairment of its ability to synthesize /βhCG, but not αhCG. The lack of utilization of αhCG in EP causes it to increase, while the level of intact hCG is low. These observations suggest that the levels of ahCG are a sensitive marker for placental well-being, and that it could serve as an additional diagnostic tool for the e...

TL;DR: The Robin anomalad was diagnosed by the sonographic detection of polyhydramnios and fetal micrognathia in a patient at risk because of a previously affected child and allowed immediate neonatal assistance to prevent glossoptosis-induced respiratory failure.

TL;DR: Nine cases of bilateral multicystic kidney disease diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound are presented and it is proposed that a reliable diagnosis can be made with prenatal ultrasound.

TL;DR: Real‐time ultrasonography was used in this study to demonstrate details of the anatomy of the face and neck of the fetus that can provide invaluable information in the search for congenital malformations, and possibly also in fetal behavior.
Abstract: Real-time ultrasonography was used in this study to demonstrate details of the anatomy of the face and neck of the fetus. Details such as the ocular globe, vitreous body, lens, anterior chamber, rectus muscles, optic nerve and disc, and the ophthalmic artery are visible at the level of the eye. The helix, scaphoid fossa, triangular fossa, concha, antihelix, antitragus, intertragic incisure, and lobule can be seen at the level of the ear. The tip of the nose, the alae nasi, and the columna are also seen. The epiglottis is visible in the vestibulum of the larynx. The fetal face is an important structure that can provide invaluable information in the search for congenital malformations, and possibly also in fetal behavior.

TL;DR: The first endoscopic intrauterine visualization of the fetus was reported by Westin (1954), and Scrimgeour proposed the term “fetoscopy,” for the endoscopic visualization ofthe fetus in 1969, which was used as a tool for antenatal diagnosis.
Abstract: The first endoscopic intrauterine visualization of the fetus was reported by Westin (1954). He inserted a 10-mm McCarthy panendoscope transcervically into the amniotic cavity in three patients undergoing midtrimester terminations of pregnancy and claimed adequate visualization of the fetus. No further reports appeared until 1969, when Scrimgeour proposed the term “fetoscopy,” for the endoscopic visualization of the fetus. Scrimgeour (1973) reported his experience with the use of a 2.2-mm fiberoptic endoscope at the time of hysterectomy in 19 patients also undergoing midtrimester terminations of pregnancy. He was also the first to use this procedure as a tool for antenatal diagnosis, reporting his results with fetoscopy in the antenatal diagnosis of six patients with a positive family history of severe central nervous system abnormalities (Scrimgeour, 1973). He correctly identified four fetuses as normal, was unable to enter the uterine cavity in one case, and considered normal an infant later delivered with spina bifida (Scrimgeour, 1973, 1976).
