Mitigating the Climate Impact from Aviation: Achievements and Results of the DLR WeCare Project
Volker Grewe,Katrin Dahlmann,Jan Flink,Christine Frömming,Robin Ghosh,Klaus Gierens,Romy Heller,Johannes Hendricks,Patrick Jöckel,Stefan H. E. Kaufmann,Katrin Kölker,Florian Linke,Tanja Luchkova,Benjamin Lührs,Jesper van Manen,Sigrun Matthes,Andreas Minikin,Malte Niklaß,Martin Plohr,Mattia Righi,Simon Rosanka,Angela R. Schmitt,Ulrich Schumann,Ivan Terekhov,Simon Unterstrasser,Margarita Vazquez-Navarro,Christiane Voigt,Kai Wicke,Hiroshi Yamashita,Andreas Zahn,Helmut Ziereis +30 more
TL;DR: The WeCare project (Utilizing Weather information for Climate efficient and eco-efficient future aviation) as mentioned in this paper aimed at finding solutions for reducing the climate impact of aviation based on an improved understanding of the atmospheric impact from aviation by making use of measurements and modeling approaches.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intercomparison of midlatitude tropospheric and lower-stratospheric water vapor measurements and comparison to ECMWF humidity data
Stefan H. E. Kaufmann,Christiane Voigt,Christiane Voigt,Romy Heller,Tina Jurkat-Witschas,Martina Krämer,Christian Rolf,Martin Zöger,Andreas Giez,Bernhard Buchholz,Volker Ebert,Troy Thornberry,Troy Thornberry,Ulrich Schumann +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive intercomparison of airborne state-of-the-art in situ hygrometers deployed on board the DLR (German Aerospace Center) research aircraft HALO (High Altitude and LOng Range Research Aircraft) during the Midlatitude CIRRUS (ML-CIRRus) campaign conducted in 2014 over central Europe is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coupling aerosols to (cirrus) clouds in the global EMAC-MADE3 aerosol–climate model
Mattia Righi,Johannes Hendricks,Ulrike Lohmann,Christof Gerhard Beer,Valerian Hahn,Bernd Heinold,Romy Heller,Martina Krämer,Michael Ponater,Christian Rolf,Ina Tegen,Christiane Voigt +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a new cloud microphysical scheme including a detailed parameterization for aerosol-driven ice formation in cirrus clouds is implemented in the globalECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) chemistry-climate model and is coupled to the third generation of the Modal Aerosol Dynamics model for Europe adapted for global applications (MADE3) aerosol submodel.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ice particle sampling from aircraft - influence of the probing position on the ice water content
Armin Afchine,Christian Rolf,Anja Costa,Nicole Spelten,Martin Riese,Bernhard Buchholz,Volker Ebert,Romy Heller,Stefan H. E. Kaufmann,Andreas Minikin,Christiane Voigt,Martin Zöger,Jessica Smith,Paul Lawson,Alexey Lykov,Sergey Khaykin,Martina Krämer +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the ice water content (IWC) of a German GV HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft) during the ML-CIRRUS field campaign in 2014.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mountain waves modulate the water vapor distribution in the UTLS
Romy Heller,Christiane Voigt,Christiane Voigt,Stuart Beaton,Andreas Dörnbrack,Andreas Giez,Stefan H. E. Kaufmann,Christian Mallaun,Hans Schlager,Johannes Wagner,Kate Young,Markus Rapp,Markus Rapp +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of mountain waves on the vertical transport and mixing of water vapor was investigated, and it was shown that a large positive vertical water vapor flux is detected above the Southern Alps extending from the troposphere to the stratosphere in the altitude range between 7.7 and 13.0
