With the growing complexity of systems, there is a corresponding increase in the complexity of the enterprises that develop, operate, and sustain such systems in an increasingly global environment. This drives the need to take a broader view of enterprises as systems in themselves to which we must apply the principles and practices of architecting. The current practice of Enterprise Architecting has been a significant contribution to creating and sustaining modern enterprises; however, we feel the current field is not a sufficient approach to the enterprises of this new century. A broader and more holistic approach is needed in context of an engineering systems perspective, drawing on the emerging systems architecting field, and taking into account new paradigms and environmental drivers. In the paper, we propose Enterprise Systems Architecting as an emerging art and science within the field of Engineering Systems. We discuss our present research focus, as well as some of the promising research being done by others that can contribute to this emerging area.

Enterprise Models for Enterprise Architecture and ISO9000:2000

The purpose of this paper is to report on a new system-theoretic based methodology and corresponding model for Enterprise Architecture development. This model captures the essence of the strategic, conceptual, doctrinal layer of the organization. Reusable Quality Technical Architectures (RQ-Tech) graphically reveals a comprehensive array of enterprise decision alternatives in easily understandable views; all while maintaining the hyperlinks to its provenance in strategic authoritative documentation. The RQ-Tech method has combined the practice of Enterprise Architectures with a modern perspective grounded in Systems Theory and the theory regarding the computer science-oriented Semantic Web. This recombination results in a distinctive methodology for developing models. Enterprises can be very confusing. They can be better understood if we look at them as groups of objects (i.e. people, tools, materials, etc.), which interact with each another. If we find that this approach is somewhat realistic, modelling an enterprise using this approach becomes more feasible. There are several important aspects of enterprises which, if understood, help us understand the enterprises themselves. The following discussion will address these important aspects.
