Many monitoring problems can be stated as the problem of detecting a change in the parameters of a static or dynamic stochastic system. The main goal of this book is to describe a unified framework for the design and the performance analysis of the algorithms for solving these change detection problems. Also the book contains the key mathematical background necessary for this purpose. Finally links with the analytical redundancy approach to fault detection in linear systems are established. We call abrupt change any change in the parameters of the system that occurs either instantaneously or at least very fast with respect to the sampling period of the measurements. Abrupt changes by no means refer to changes with large magnitude; on the contrary, in most applications the main problem is to detect small changes. Moreover, in some applications, the early warning of small - and not necessarily fast - changes is of crucial interest in order to avoid the economic or even catastrophic consequences that can result from an accumulation of such small changes. For example, small faults arising in the sensors of a navigation system can result, through the underlying integration, in serious errors in the estimated position of the plane. Another example is the early warning of small deviations from the normal operating conditions of an industrial process. The early detection of slight changes in the state of the process allows to plan in a more adequate manner the periods during which the process should be inspected and possibly repaired, and thus to reduce the exploitation costs.

Robust Model-Based Fault Diagnosis for Dynamic Systems

Fault diagnosis in dynamic systems using analytical and knowledge-based redundancy—a survey and some new results

This paper deals with fault-tolerant control of a network controlled systems (NCS) problem, where the sensors, actuator and controller are inter-connected via a communication network. A procedure is proposed for controlling a system over a network using the concept of an NCS-information-packet which is an augmented vector comprising control moves and fault flags. The size of this packet is used to define a completely fault tolerant NCS. The behavior and control of this scheme is illustrated by way of an example, where the plant is being controlled over a network. Implicit in this paper is that appropriate FDI schemes exist within the set up. The software environment used is MATLABcopy and LABVIEWcopy. The results illustrate that the scheme is tolerant to faults.

The likelihood that actuator systems (e.g. control valves, servo motors, positioners) will malfunction is significant when these components are installed in harsh environments (e.g. with high temperature, humidity, pollution, chemical solvents, aggressive media etc.). Determination of small (incipient, hard to detect) faults before they become serious clearly has an important influence on the actuator's predicted lifetime.

Fault diagnosis of industrial actuators in a sugar factory: a European study

The design capabilities of a class of periodic systems, multirate systems with multiple input and fixed output (MIFO) rates, for application to the eigenstructure assignment robust design technique, are examined. A special feature of the MIFO multirate systems is the ability to introduce extra design freedom in the eigenproblem by a suitable choice of sample rates. The criteria for the selection of minimum sample rates to produce this extra design freedom and the implication of this choice for the eigenstructure procedure are outlined. The use of the extra freedom to produce perfectly decoupled closed-loop modal responses is examined. The improved insensitivity properties of these solutions are demonstrated with an example which compares the performance of multirate and corresponding single rate designs. >
