TL;DR: A collaborative genome-wide association study, including >17,100 advanced AMD cases and >60,000 controls of European and Asian ancestry, identifies 19 loci associated at P < 5 × 10−8, which show enrichment for genes involved in the regulation of complement activity, lipid metabolism, extracellular matrix remodeling and angiogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retinal microvascular abnormalities and incident stroke: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.
Tien Yin Wong,Tien Yin Wong,Ronald Klein,David Couper,Lawton S. Cooper,Eyal Shahar,Larry D. Hubbard,Marion R. Wofford,A. Richey Sharrett +8 more
TL;DR: Most retinal microvascular characteristics were predictive of incident stroke, and the associations were similar for ischaemic strokes specifically, and for strokes in individuals with hypertension, either with or without diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy: XVII. The 14-year incidence and progression of diabetic retinopathy and associated risk factors in type 1 diabetes
TL;DR: The data suggest relatively high 14-year rates of progression of retinopathy and incidence of macular edema and suggest that a reduction of hyperglycemia and hypertension may result in a beneficial decrease in the progression to proliferative Retinopathy.
Journal ArticleDOI
A simplified severity scale for age-related macular degeneration: AREDS Report No. 18.
Frederick L. Ferris,Davis,Traci E Clemons,L.–Y. Lee,Emily Y. Chew,Anne S. Lindblad,Roy C. Milton,Susan B. Bressler,Ronald Klein +8 more
TL;DR: This simplified scale provides convenient risk categories for development of advanced AMD that can be determined by clinical examination or by less demanding photographic procedures than used in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study.
Journal ArticleDOI
Renal and Retinal Effects of Enalapril and Losartan in Type 1 Diabetes
Michael Mauer,Bernard Zinman,Robert Gardiner,Samy Suissa,Alan R. Sinaiko,Trudy Strand,Keith N. Drummond,Sandra Donnelly,Paul Goodyer,Marie Claire Gubler,Ronald Klein +10 more
TL;DR: Early blockade of the renin-angiotensin system in patients with type 1 diabetes did not slow nephropathy progression but slowed the progression of retinopathy.
