The Changing Paradigm of Air Pollution Monitoring

TL;DR: Air pollution monitoring paradigm is rapidly changing due to recent advances in the development of portable, lower-cost air pollution sensors reporting data in near-real time at a high-time resolution, increased computational and visualization capabilities, and wireless communication/infrastructure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Particulate Matter Exposure in Cars Is Associated with Cardiovascular Effects in Healthy Young Men

TL;DR: The observations in young, healthy, nonsmoking, male North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers suggest that in-vehicle exposure to PM(2.5) may cause pathophysiologic changes that involve inflammation, coagulation, and cardiac rhythm.
Journal ArticleDOI

Particulate matter and heart rate variability among elderly retirees: the Baltimore 1998 PM study.

TL;DR: A spline mixed-effects model revealed a negative relationship between outdoor 24-h average fine particulate matter and high-frequency HRV that was consistent with an earlier Baltimore study and is consistent with earlier findings that exposures to PM2.5 are associated with decreased HRV in the elderly.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cardiovascular effects in patrol officers are associated with fine particulate matter from brake wear and engine emissions.

TL;DR: PM2.5 originating from speed-changing traffic modulates the autonomic control of the heart rhythm, increases the frequency of premature supraventricular beats and elicits pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic responses in healthy young men.
