Automated Reasoning with Analytic Tableaux and Related Methods: International Conference, TABLEAUX 2000 St Andrews, Scotland, UK, July 3-7, 2000 Proceedings

We consider in this paper first-order hybrid Petri nets, a model that consists of continuous places holding fluid, discrete places containing a nonnegative integer number of tokens, and transitions, either discrete or continuous. We set up a linear algebraic formalism to study the first-order continuous behavior of this model and show how its control can be framed as a conflict resolution policy that aims at optimizing a given objective function. The use of linear algebra leads to sensitivity analysis that allows one to study of how changes in the structure of the model influence the optimal behavior. As an example of application, we show how the proposed formalism can be applied to flexible manufacturing systems with arbitrary layout and different classes of products.

Plusieurs approches de recherche sur les systemes hybrides sont abordees et une liste etendue de references est proposee. Les approches a base de reseaux de Petri sont plus particulierement abordees.

On hybrid control of complex systems : a survey

As a preliminary overview, this work provides first a broad tutorial on the fluidization of discrete event dynamic models, an efficient technique for dealing with the classical state explosion problem. Even if named as continuous or fluid, the relaxed models obtained are frequently hybrid in a technical sense. Thus, there is plenty of room for using discrete, hybrid and continuous model techniques for logical verification, performance evaluation and control studies. Moreover, the possibilities for transferring concepts and techniques from one modeling paradigm to others are very significant, so there is much space for synergy. As a central modeling paradigm for parallel and synchronized discrete event systems, Petri nets (PNs) are then considered in much more detail. In this sense, this paper is somewhat complementary to David and Alla (2010). Our presentation of fluid views or approximations of PNs has sometimes a flavor of a survey, but also introduces some new ideas or techniques. Among the aspects that distinguish the adopted approach are: the focus on the relationships between discrete and continuous PN models, both for untimed, i.e., fully non-deterministic abstractions, and timed versions; the use of structure theory of (discrete) PNs, algebraic and graph based concepts and results; and the bridge to Automatic Control Theory. After discussing observability and controllability issues, the most technical part in this work, the paper concludes with some remarks and possible directions for future research.

On fluidization of discrete event models: observation and control of continuous Petri nets

Cet article traite la modelisation et la simulation d'une unite de stockage de gaz. Le modele est base sur la combinaison de reseaux de Petri et d'equations algebro-differencielles. L'interaction entre les RdP Pr/Tr et les equations est formellement definie a l'aide des fonctions de sensibilisation et de jonction qui sont associees aux transitions du RdP Pr/Tr. Apres avoir introduit la technique de modelisation a travers l'exemple de l'unite de stockage de gaz, un algorithme de simulation sera presente.

This paper deals with interactive storytelling for games. The principle used in narration is based on Campbell's heroes journey. The paper begins by introducing Campbell analysis and then presents how this model has been transformed in a pattern for interactive storytelling. Then, it shows how this model can be used for educational games. Finally an experimentation is presented showing an implementation of this interactive storytelling in the field of a game using a robot.

Interactive Storytelling is a major endeavour to develop new media which could offer a radically new user experience, with a potential to revolutionise digital entertainment. European research in Interactive Storytelling has played a leading role in the development of the field, and this creates a unique opportunity to strengthen its position even further by structuring collaboration between some of its main actors. IRIS (Integrating Research in Interactive Storytelling) aims at creating a virtual centre of excellence that will be able to progress the understanding of fundamental aspects of Interactive Storytelling and the development of corresponding technologies.

Interactive narrative and video games are two fields divided between the will to follow a scenario and that to offer a maximum of freedom and interaction. We propose a method combining emergent narrative theory and game monitoring to create a new system of dynamic generation of narrative. This method is based on a multi-agent architecture, which supervises and monitors the game execution.allIt uses of narrative structures descriptors as a reference to lead the evolution of an emergent narrative world. A first application has been developed to test the validity of the system in term of effectiveness and computational cost.
