Journal ArticleDOI

Feeding habits of four sympatric fish species in the Iberian Peninsula: keys to understanding coexistence using prey traits

TL;DR: Differences in diel activity patterns and drift behaviour of preys, as well as differences in the prey size, are important adaptive features that may reduce the inter-specific competition in the fish community and permit the partitioning of food that allows coexistence.
Journal ArticleDOI

Downstream migration and hematophagous feeding of newly metamorphosed sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus, 1758)

TL;DR: Results show that downstream migration occurs between October and May with a peak in March, and suggest that part of the postmetamorphic lampreys start the hematophagous feeding in the river, with a special affinity for anadromous species, probably because of their larger size.
Journal ArticleDOI

Life cycle of the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus: duration of and growth in the marine life stage

TL;DR: It is suggested that at least a portion of the sea lamprey population can reach adult size in 1 yr of hematophagous feeding, and a period between completion of metamorphosis and reproduction of 1.5 yr (18 to 20 mo).
Journal ArticleDOI

Temporal trends in non-indigenous freshwater species records during the 20th century: a case study in the Iberian Peninsula

TL;DR: A detailed analysis of introductions of those species with records after 1900 present in both areas shows that delays were up to 100 years for species introduced on the Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of the twentieth century, but the tendency adjust to a decreasing linear regression, with species introduced after 1995 being almost immediately present in Galicia.
Book ChapterDOI

Ontogenetic Dietary Shifts in a Predatory Freshwater Fish Species: The Brown Trout as an Example of a Dynamic Fish Species

TL;DR: The brown trout (Salmo trutta) is a species of Eurasian origin, but at has become naturalized in many other parts of the world and it has an outstanding socio-economic importance, both in commercial and sport fisheries.
