TL;DR: In this paper, a theory of anomalous magnetic and electric birefringence in the isotropic phase of nematic liquid crystals taking into account orientational correlations between neighbouring molecules was developed.
Abstract: A theory is developed of the anomalous magnetic and electric birefringence in the isotropic phase of nematic liquid crystals taking into account orientational correlations between neighbouring molecules. Use is made of a modification of Bethe’s method due to Krieger and James, and the properties of the system are derived in terms of a single parameter, viz., the two-particle interaction constant. The expressions for the magnetic and electric birefringence are similar in form to those given by the phenomenological model of de Gennes. Theoretical curves forp-azoxyanisole reproduce the trends in the observed data. A calculation of the nematic-isotropic transition point confirms that this treatment is an improvement over the mean field approximation in describing pre-transition phenomena in the isotropic phase.

TL;DR: In this article, a theory of the optical properties of a non-absorbing compensated cholesteric liquid crystal was developed and it was shown that the Mauguin-de Vries equation fails when the pitch becomes very large.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Maier-Saupe treatment of p-azoxyanisole has been extended to give a quantitative description of the following properties of the p-Zoxynisole: (a) the volume change at the nematic-isotropic transition point Tc, (b) the temperature variation of the long range orientational order parameter s 1 at constant pressure, (c) the heat variation of s 1 in constant volume, and (d) the pressure invariance of s1 at constant temperature.
Abstract: The extension of the Maier-Saupe treatment of nematic liquid crystals discussed in previous papers is able to give a quantitative description of the following properties of p-azoxyanisole: (a) the volume change at the nematic-isotropic transition point Tc , (b) the temperature variation of the long range orientational order parameter s 1 at constant pressure, (c) the temperature variation of s 1 at constant volume, (d) the volume variation of s 1 at constant temperature, and (e) the pressure invariance of s 1 at T c.

TL;DR: In this paper, a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal (n-ρmethoxy- benzylidene-ρ-butylanilin) under the action of electric fields has been studied employing a geometry in which the observation direction is along the optic axis of the undistorted specimen aud the field direction perpendicular to it.
Abstract: Distortion partelm in a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal (n-ρ-methoxy- benzylidene-ρ-butylanilin) under the action of electric fields have been studied employing a geometry in which the observation direction is along the optic axis of the undistorted specimen aud the field direction perpendicular to it. Some interesting new features m described.
