TL;DR: Based on the x-ray data, a structure is proposed in which the discs are stacked one on top of the other in columns that constitute a hexagonal arrangement, but the spacing between the discs in each column is irregular as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Thermotropic mesomorphism has been observed in pure compounds consisting of simple disc-like molecules, viz., benzene-hexa-n-alkanoates. Thermodynamic, optical and x-ray studies indicate that the mesophase is a highly ordered lamellar type of liquid crystal. Based on the x-ray data, a structure is proposed in which the discs are stacked one on top of the other in columns that constitute a hexagonal arrangement, but the spacing between the discs in each column is irregular. Thus the structure has translational periodicity in two dimensions and liquid-like disorder in the third.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss some possible experimental geometries for studying Leslie's thermomechanical effect in cholesteric liquid crystals, including the effect of a temperature gradient along and perpendicular to the helical axis.
Abstract: We discuss some possible experimental geometries for studying Leslie's thermomechanical effect in cholesteric liquid crystals. The discussion includes the effect of a temperature gradient (i) along and (ii) perpendicular to the helical axis. The feasibility of observing the effect and of extracting the thermomechanical coefficients is examined.

TL;DR: In this paper, an X-ray investigation has been made of the pressure dependence of the layer spacing in the smectic C phase of 4,4′-bis(heptyloxy)azoxybenzene (HOAB) up to 3.8 kbar.
Abstract: Using an opposed diamond anvil cell, an X-ray investigation has been made of the pressure dependence of the layer spacing in the smectic C phase of 4,4′-bis(heptyloxy)azoxybenzene (HOAB) up to 3.8 kbar. It is found that the layer spacing is independent of pressure to within the experimental limits. It is concluded therefore that the suppression of the smectic C phase of this compound at higher pressures is not due to a tilt angle variation with pressure.
