TL;DR: This paper presents an overview of nanopositioning technologies and devices emphasizing the key role of advanced control techniques in improving precision, accuracy, and speed of operation of these systems.
Abstract: Nanotechnology is the science of understanding matter and the control of matter at dimensions of 100 nm or less. Encompassing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology, nanotechnology involves imaging, measuring, modeling, and manipulation of matter at this level of precision. An important aspect of research in nanotechnology involves precision control and manipulation of devices and materials at a nanoscale, i.e., nanopositioning. Nanopositioners are precision mechatronic systems designed to move objects over a small range with a resolution down to a fraction of an atomic diameter. The desired attributes of a nanopositioner are extremely high resolution, accuracy, stability, and fast response. The key to successful nanopositioning is accurate position sensing and feedback control of the motion. This paper presents an overview of nanopositioning technologies and devices emphasizing the key role of advanced control techniques in improving precision, accuracy, and speed of operation of these systems.

TL;DR: This paper surveys key advances in mechanical design and control of dynamic effects and nonlinearities, in the context of high-speed nanopositioning, as well as future challenges and research topics.
Abstract: Recent interest in high-speed scanning probe microscopy for high-throughput applications including video-rate atomic force microscopy and probe-based nanofabrication has sparked attention on the development of high-bandwidth flexure-guided nanopositioning systems (nanopositioners). Such nanopositioners are designed to move samples with sub-nanometer resolution with positioning bandwidth in the kilohertz range. State-of-the-art designs incorporate uniquely designed flexure mechanisms driven by compact and stiff piezoelectric actuators. This paper surveys key advances in mechanical design and control of dynamic effects and nonlinearities, in the context of high-speed nanopositioning. Future challenges and research topics are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of the literature on piezoelectric shunt damping and discuss recent observations on the feedback nature of shunt-based damping systems.
Abstract: Research on shunted piezoelectric transducers, performed mainly over the past decade, has generated new opportunities for control of vibration and damping in flexible structures. This is made possible by the strong electromechanical coupling associated with modern piezoelectric transducers. In vibration control applications, a piezoelectric transducer is bonded to, or embedded in a base structure. As the structure deforms, the piezoelectric element strains and converts a portion of the structural vibration energy into electrical energy. By shunting the piezoelectric transducer to an electrical impedance, a part of the induced electrical energy can be dissipated. Hence, the impedance acts as a means of extracting mechanical energy from the base structure. This paper reviews recent research related to the use of shunted piezoelectric elements for vibration damping and control. In particular, the paper presents an overview of the literature on piezoelectric shunt damping and discusses recent observations on the feedback nature of piezoelectric shunt damping systems.

TL;DR: In this article, a broadband active shunt technique for controlling vibration in piezoelectric laminated structures is proposed, which is similar in nature to passive shunt damping techniques.
Abstract: In this paper a broadband active shunt technique for controlling vibration in piezoelectric laminated structures is proposed. The effect of the negative capacitance controller is studied theoretically and then validated experimentally on a piezoelectric laminated simply supported plate. The 'negative capacitance controller' is similar in nature to passive shunt damping techniques, as a single piezoelectric transducer is used to dampen multiple modes. While achieving comparable performance to that of the passive shunt schemes, the negative capacitance controller has a number of advantages. It is simpler to implement, less sensitive to environmental variations and can be considered as a broadband vibration absorber.

TL;DR: Experimental results demonstrate significant reduction in hysteresis due to the use of a charge amplifier, and piezoelectric shunt damping, a technique previously resident in the field of smart structures, is applied to damp tube vibration.
Abstract: Piezoelectric tube scanners are employed in high-resolution positioning applications such as scanning probe microscopy and nanofabrication. Much research has proceeded with the aim of reducing hysteresis and vibration-the two foremost problems associated with piezoelectric tube scanners. In this paper, two simple techniques are proposed for simultaneously reducing hysteresis and vibration: 1) A new dc accurate charge amplifier is shown to significantly reduce hysteresis while avoiding characteristic voltage drift. 2) Piezoelectric shunt damping, a technique previously resident in the field of smart structures, has been applied to damp tube vibration. By attaching an LCR impedance to a single tube electrode, the first mechanical mode is reduced in magnitude by more than 20 dB.

TL;DR: This Review will cover materials and devices designed for mimicking the skin's ability to sense and generate biomimetic signals.
Abstract: Skin plays an important role in mediating our interactions with the world. Recreating the properties of skin using electronic devices could have profound implications for prosthetics and medicine. The pursuit of artificial skin has inspired innovations in materials to imitate skin's unique characteristics, including mechanical durability and stretchability, biodegradability, and the ability to measure a diversity of complex sensations over large areas. New materials and fabrication strategies are being developed to make mechanically compliant and multifunctional skin-like electronics, and improve brain/machine interfaces that enable transmission of the skin's signals into the body. This Review will cover materials and devices designed for mimicking the skin's ability to sense and generate biomimetic signals.
