Abstract: The multipurpose Maithon dam of Damodar Valley Corporation on the Barakar river is located north of the Maithon town along Jharkhand-West Bengal border, eastern India. So far very little is known about the drainage pattern of the Maithon reservoir catchment area. An attempt has been made in the present communication to document some preliminary observations on stream courses in northern and eastern parts of about 195 km 2 reservoir catchment area. The NW-SE trending Eastern Railways Main Line (Fig. 1) marks the watershed between the Maithon reservoir and the adjoining Ajay river, east of the reservoir. The study area falls within latitudes 23 ~ 44'-24 ~ N and longitude 86 ~ 44'-86 ~ 52'E.
