Abstract: Arastirma, ogretmen adaylarinin arkadaslarini, okul uygulama ogretmenlerini, kendilerini ve fakulte ogretim elemanlarini ogretmenlik yeterlikleri acisindan degerlendirmeleri uzerine odaklanmistir. Olcme araci olarak YOK’un Ogretmenlik Uygulamasi Degerlendirme Formu’ndaki bazi olcutlerden yararlanilmistir. Olcegin uyarlanmasi ve faktor analizi arastirmacilar tarafindan yapilmistir. 33 soruluk olcek, arastirmada, ogretmen adaylarinin arkadaslarina, okul uygulama ogretmenlerine ve kendilerine yonelik ogretmenlik yeterlikleri ile ilgili degerlendirmeleri alma amaciyla uc boyutlu olarak uygulanmistir. Arastirma calisma grubunu 172 Ortaogretim Sosyal ve Fen-Matematik Alanlar Egitimi bolumlerinde ogrenim goren tezsiz yuksek lisans ogretmen adaylari olusturmaktadir. Ogretmen adaylari, arkadaslarini, okul uygulama ogretmenlerini, kendilerini ve fakulte ogretim elemanlarini ogretmenlik niteliklerinde yeterli olarak degerlendirmektedirler. Ogretmen adaylari ogretmenlik yeterlikleri acisindan bir olcutte arkadasinin, 8 olcutte kendisinin ve 18 olcutte ise okul uygulama ogretmeninin daha yeterli oldugu gorusundedirler. Bayan ogretmen adaylari erkeklere gore kendilerini, genel olarak daha yeterli degerlendirmektedir.

Abstract: How much importance is attached to motivational strategies in foreign language teaching by student teachers and the extent to which instructors use them in their courses was investigated. The study was performed with 179 student teachers attending the English Language Teaching Department of Mugla University, Turkey. The findings revealed that these student teachers thought motivational strategies were very important for learning a foreign language, and that their instructors use some of these strategies but did not use other strategies considered to be important by the student teachers. Interviews showed that students thought studying the cultural values of the target language facilitates fluent use of that language and assists retention.

Abstract: Nature of science is defined as one of the directions of scientific literacy. The main aim of this study was to investigate both secondary school social and science branch post-graduate (non-thesis master) teacher candidates attitudes about the Nature of Science (NOS) and compare their attitudes towards NOS. A 12-item Likert type scale for teacher candidates was used, based on responses of 207 participants. The results indicated that teachers had low positive attitudes towards NOS, but found some significant understanding differences against scaled items between social and science teacher candidates. There was no relationship between the attitudes to the NOS, and the scientific disciplines.

Abstract: This study aimed to assess grade 10 Turkish students' and science teachers' conceptions of nature of science (NOS) and whether these conceptions were related to selected variables. These variables included participants' gender, geographical region, and the socioeconomic status (SES) of their city and region; teacher disciplinary background, years of teaching experience, graduate degree, and type of teacher training program; and student household SES and parents' educational level. A stratified sampling approach was used to generate a representative national sample comprising 2,087 students and 378 science teachers. After establishing their validity in the Turkish context, participants were administered a questionnaire comprising 14 modified “Views on Science-Technology-Society” (VOSTS) items to assess their views of certain aspects of NOS. A total of 2,020 students (97%) and 362 teachers (96%) completed the questionnaire. Participant responses were categorized as “naive,” “have merit,” or “informed,” and the frequency distributions for these responses were compared for various groupings of participants. The majority of participants held naive views of a majority of the target NOS aspects. Teacher views were mostly similar to those of their students. Teacher and student views of some NOS aspects were related to some of the target variables. These included teacher graduate degree and geographical region, and student household SES, parent education, and SES of their city and geographical region. The relationship between student NOS views and enhanced economic and educational capitals of their households, as well as the SES status of their cities and geographical regions point to significant cultural (specifically Western) and intellectual underpinnings of understandings about NOS. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
