Creation and diagnosis of a solid-density plasma with an X-ray free-electron laser
Sam Vinko,O. Ciricosta,Byoung-ick Cho,K. Engelhorn,Hyun-Kyung Chung,C. R. D. Brown,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,Roger Falcone,Roger Falcone,Catherine Graves,Věra Hájková,Andrew Higginbotham,Libor Juha,Jacek Krzywinski,H. J. Lee,Marc Messerschmidt,C. D. Murphy,Yuan Ping,Andreas Scherz,William F. Schlotter,Sven Toleikis,Joshua J. Turner,L. Vysin,Tianhan Wang,B. Wu,Ulf Zastrau,Diling Zhu,Richard W. Lee,P.A. Heimann,Bob Nagler,Justin Wark +31 more
TL;DR: The experimental creation of a solid-density plasma at temperatures in excess of 106 kelvin on inertial-confinement timescales using an X-ray free-electron laser is reported and insights are obtained into the evolution of the charge state distribution of the system, the electron density and temperature, and the timescale of collisional processes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Direct measurements of the ionization potential depression in a dense plasma.
O. Ciricosta,Sam Vinko,Hyun-Kyung Chung,Byoung-ick Cho,C. R. D. Brown,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,K. Engelhorn,Roger Falcone,Roger Falcone,Catherine Graves,Věra Hájková,Andrew Higginbotham,Libor Juha,Jacek Krzywinski,Hae Ja Lee,Marc Messerschmidt,C. D. Murphy,Yuan Ping,D. S. Rackstraw,Andreas Scherz,William F. Schlotter,Sven Toleikis,Joshua J. Turner,L. Vysin,Tianhan Wang,Benny Wu,Ulf Zastrau,Diling Zhu,R. W. Lee,P.A. Heimann,Bob Nagler,Justin Wark +32 more
TL;DR: The results are found to disagree with the predictions of the extensively used Stewart-Pyatt model, but are consistent with the earlier model of Ecker and Kröll, which predicts significantly greater depression of the ionization potential.
Journal ArticleDOI
Short-wavelength free-electron laser sources and science: a review
E. A. Seddon,E. A. Seddon,E. A. Seddon,J. A. Clarke,J. A. Clarke,David Dunning,David Dunning,Claudio Masciovecchio,Christopher J. Milne,Fulvio Parmigiani,Fulvio Parmigiani,D Rugg,John C. H. Spence,N.R. Thompson,N.R. Thompson,Kiyoshi Ueda,Sam Vinko,Justin Wark,Wilfried Wurth +18 more
TL;DR: This review is focused on free-electron lasers (FELs) in the hard to soft x-ray regime and provides newcomers to the area with insights into: the basic physics of FELs, the qualities of the radiation they produce, the challenges of transmitting that radiation to end users and the diversity of current scientific applications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurements of continuum lowering in solid-density plasmas created from elements and compounds
O. Ciricosta,Sam Vinko,B. Barbrel,D. S. Rackstraw,T. R. Preston,Tomáš Burian,Jaromír Chalupský,B. I. Cho,Hyun-Kyung Chung,Georgi L. Dakovski,K. Engelhorn,Věra Hájková,Philip Heimann,Michael Holmes,Libor Juha,Jacek Krzywinski,Richard W. Lee,Sven Toleikis,Joshua J. Turner,Ulf Zastrau,Ulf Zastrau,Justin Wark +21 more
TL;DR: The standard density-dependent analytical models are shown to be inadequate to describe solid-density plasmas at the temperatures studied, where the reduction of the binding energies for a given species is unaffected by the different plasma environment in either the element or compounds of that species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Density functional theory calculations of continuum lowering in strongly coupled plasmas
TL;DR: It is found that the continuum lowering for ions in dense plasmas at intermediate temperatures is larger than predicted by standard plasma models and this effect is explained through the electronic structure of the valence states in these strong-coupling conditions.
